I like MZ Wallace (the not quilted ones) for everyday and gor travel. I’d also look at everlane.

My DH has an Osprey and it’s functional and sleek:

Tumi nylon backpack is great with lots of pocket and space for laptop.

I'm all for paying for quality but in this case I just think it costs a lot to create and market a backpack brand in the US, but the ones on Amazon are the same thing.

I've been using this one for 4 years: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0784LMD7J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&th=1

NP, but wow, I really like that one. But I will confess to being a bit brand conscious (not high end, mid range). What is this one a knock off of?

To me it looks like a Tumi knock off. But actually a bit more functional than a Tumi.

Ive been eyeing this one, but I don’t love the way it looks while being worn.

It looks awesome but manly. I wanted something either elegant or fun.

Ha! I have the diaper bag version of this backpack. I bought it 7 years ago on Amazon for $36, it still looks new. I’m seriously considering using it, but it’s a tad small for what I need.

That one amazon looks like a knockoff of Knomo backpacks.

The messenger bag my husband uses for work is this brand and he has the world’s heaviest laptop. Quality bags. He has had it for years and it’s still in great shape.

What size (volume) are you looking for, OP?

If you're looking for a carryon backpack with the maximum dimensions allowed for a carryon, none will look stylish. They will just look big, bulky and boxy like you have a tortoise shell on your back.

+1

I'm glad OP started this thread bc I liked some of the recs for other purposes!

But something so big is just not going to look good on your back. Which is fine. But there isn't going to be this great match of size and style.
