Show me a good school in Arlington that has walkability / close to metro. Yes, good schools means test scores.

Cardinal or Tuckahoe ES Swanson MS Yorktown. HS Walk to EFC Metro and Westover Village.

I do not get this. If you live in north Arlington schools are not a factor. I think the train has left the station on APS and private is really the question. How long is your commute to the PRIVATE school you are sending you kids to?

No one should be moving to Arlington for the school system. It is about the location and not being in dc. APS is highly average, at best.

Maybe overall. Washington-Liberty is essentially a private school within a public school. I don't know the percent, but I'd guess the 20/80 rule is more like 30/70. A smaller percentage of students are in AP, IB, and Intensified classes and rarely interact with the general student body except for classes like PE and other odd electives. If you are an educated parent who cares about your child's education, you will be fine at W&L. If your kid vapes and ditches class to head to Ballston Mall, they will not be interacting with the top students. The economic diversity is often the difference and there are many wealthy POC who attend.

Wow. Nice pull. Westover kind of sucks for walking options; but yes, you could live there and have a 15 minute walk to a few shops and the Italian Store and metro if you live closer to FC.

Biking into the city regularly you want to be courthouse, rosslyn or crystal city area. Metro to dc anything out to ballston and it is a few mile bike ride into dc that may not be a daily commute option for biking.

For 1.8m it may be tight in n Arlington. Nicer homes close to metro are 2m and up. Maybe in Arlington forest or bluemont you could get something decent for 1.8; but that is a solid 15 -20 minute walk to metro/ballston.

Maryland may be a better option if you do not care about in state colleges.

+1 We're in Ashton Heights/Lyon Park neighborhood and I know a number of people who regularly bike to jobs in DC. My husband used to bike when he worked in Georgetown. have a short walk to the VA Square metro. Updated homes are generally $2M+ but sometimes you can find something lower, e.g.

I just checked out what's available in Lyon Park on redfin and saw some of the ugliest houses I've seen in a while.

Arlington is just really ugly in general. The housing stock is really bizarre, and it seems like nothing about the way the county is organized was very well thought out. Bethesda and Chevy chase are nicer and more upscale. But they’re all boring suburbs at the end of the day.

Naive Capitol Hill resident here. Thought the tried and true Hill strategy was to bail for a place like arlington for better schools. How have the schools in APS declined?

The schools are fine to good depending on who you ask. This is just a message board with trolls.

Arlington schools are ok but they’re not as good as Montgomery or Fairfax counties. Arlington is just really small by comparison and doesn’t have the resources of larger counties. People move to Arlington for proximity to dc and the schools are passable. But if your kids are extremely gifted, they’ll be better served in mcps or fcps.

Oh please, this forum is full of people claiming MoCo and FFX are going down the drain.

Either Westbrook cachement area of Bethesda (walkable to FH Metro) or Edgemoor or East Bethesda (walkable to downtown Bethesda and Metro).

Both areas also are likable to downtown and close to CC trail.

Well both counties have many high schools that are ranked significantly higher than Yorktown in us news.
