Grinnell vs Kenyon

Everyone keeps talking about OP and financial aid, but she hasn’t mentioned need based financial aid at all. My presumption is that she doesn’t qualify.

Grinnell is isolated but Kenyon is ISOLATED. At least Grinnell has the small town. You can't call Gambier a town.

+1 my sister went to Kenyon and I considered Grinnell but ended up at Colgate. Grinnell was just so far.

OP, you need a lot more target schools. It doesn’t matter where your DC is coming from or his grades and ECs- those are all reaches, Grinnell, too.
BTDT. Our DC got in ED. The other poster is correct, he will end up at your state school if that is his complete list. Kenyon would be more of a target- still, not a safety.

Grinnell is stronger in most subjects. Kenyon for writing. Different types of students. Grinnell is less preppy, more worldly. Town is small but much more there than at Kenyon.

Based on this, as between Kenyon and Grinnell, Kenyon because it’s easier to get into. Grinnell big merit money is going to the kid that could maybe go to Yale.

Grinnell students have very little to do with the town.

I ask because many LACs seem to be moving toward being primarily a safe haven for such individuals & advertising that emphasis. TIA

Not LGBTQ+

Other schools on the list: Yale, Georgetown, Williams, Bowdoin, Middlebury, our State U (which is a lock, not VA)

On the bubble: McGill, Carleton, Macalester, Kenyon, Grinnell, Rice.

No ED, we want to look at the money.

If your kid isn’t ED, Grinnell isn’t a target. It’s that simple. For that matter, basically no highly selective school is.

So the only safety is your state school and everything else is selective and private? Is your kid ok with that? Do they have outstanding sttas?

I agree, you need to slide down the US News ranks a bit of you want a SLAC with merit. Macalester gives decent merit, Carleton does not. Maybe add somewhere like Oxy or Conn College or Dickinson if you want small. Seriously.

Why not at least REA to Yale? You can still look at the $ then. Agree it’s a tough list with no ED.”, but if your state school is a lock and happy there then seems fine

My kid got a lot of merit from Macalester, but the Carleton overall cost wasn't much higher. They have some scholarships specifically for middle-income students, too.

Yale without another Ivy+ plus the limited number of apps = one of the top three high school in the US. I think I know which one, but could be one of the three.

I really wish our HS would limit kids to picking one ivy+. Better outcomes for the entire class.

If a parent of a student attending one of the top three high schools in the USA has to come here of all places instead of relying on the school’s guidance department then the rest of us sure have a real problem.

Grinnell can be generous with merit. Kenyon is less generous.

You might want to take a look at St. Olaf.

Carleton is generous with financial aid, though.

as is Williams, Bowdoin and Yale. Grinnell has a lot of merit. Mcgill is cheaper. State is cheaper.
