Grinnell vs Kenyon

Looking to add a target to dcs list w merit potential. Not sure we’ll be able to visit before apps so in and out HS limits apps so does anyone have a strong feeling about either?

Public policy/Econ/history kinda major.

Kenyon is the easier admit for a full pay student and more likely to be a target. Grinnell has more money and is generous with merit but is a harder admit than Kenyon for a full pay student. It’s more of a reach for most students.

Kenyon would be easier to get too - it's at least driveable from DC.

Grinnell is isolated but Kenyon is ISOLATED. At least Grinnell has the small town. You can't call Gambier a town.

What are your other schools? That will help inform our opinions.

In recent years Grinnell’s acceptance rate has been around 10 percent. Nobody can consider a school like that to be a “target” anymore. It’s become a reach for just about everyone.

Kenyon still admits more than 1/3 of its applicants but isn’t nearly as generous with merit aid. Grinnell has a LOT more money.

You need to check out the ED admissions rate.

Right. I just did. 292 members of Grinnell’s entering class of 437 were admitted ED last year - and admit rate of over 50 percent. In contrast, only 8.3 percent of regular decision applicants got in.

This tells me that unless OP’s kid applies to Grinnell ED, it’s a reach.

Kenyon is less clear on its ED and RD rates, but both are higher than Grinnell.

Serious Question: Is the applicant LGBTQ+ ?

I ask because many LACs seem to be moving toward being primarily a safe haven for such individuals & advertising that emphasis. TIA

Not LGBTQ+

Other schools on the list: Yale, Georgetown, Williams, Bowdoin, Middlebury, our State U (which is a lock, not VA)

On the bubble: McGill, Carleton, Macalester, Kenyon, Grinnell, Rice.

No ED, we want to look at the money.

If your kid isn’t ED, Grinnell isn’t a target. It’s that simple. For that matter, basically no highly selective school is.

Grinnell is amazing but it is very different from gtown, Williams Bowdoin middlebury

It’s more like swat

A lot more high fashion and polish at those schools than grinnell and also more Wall Street/preprofessionalnkids

Grinnell, swat, oberlin, reed, haverford have mor in common with each other

Your bubble list has more in common with grinnell than the first list

Reality is what it is. If you don't apply ED to schools of this caliber, you're unlikely to get into any.

Unless OP’s son is a real superstar every one of the schools on her primary list are reaches (because they are reaches for everyone) except State U. As for the “bubble” list, most of those are reaches as well, especially since the kid isn’t applying ED anywhere.

OP’s kid runs a real risk of not getting into anywhere but State U if this is the complete list and no ED application.

I'd take it all as one list. Kid is limited the number of apps, so we have to narrow down the bubble. We'd apply to all if we could. We visited Oberlin last year and .. eh, but we had a really specific kinda guide. Swat seems like a reach, and they have enough reaches. They loved Williams and Bowdoin both if that gives you any guidance
