openings for rising 7th graders

Langley and Congressional are K-8s in VA that you may want to consider.

We applied for my child for 6th grade a few years ago, and our kid literally checks every single one of those boxes and is an A student and didn’t get in. Just because it isnt SFS, STA or GDS doesn’t mean you can just walk in.

+1

Burke is more competitive now and I highly doubt they have openings. It can't hurt to call but it definitely doesn't have rolling admissions or random spots open. If they have a spot its because of an unexpectedly student departure. Burke is getting solid kids who are looking for something specific. You're not going to walk up in August and just get accepted.

Okay we're giving OP suggestions on schools that might be happening. If Burke is so super duper exclusive and is unlikely to admit OP's child than can we STFU about it?

My daughter is at Stone Ridge and I have known them in the past to have later admissions to classes. I'm not certain about 7th grade for this upcoming year, so I suggest you call them to inquire. Stone Ridge is a school which practices "responsive classroom" practices which teach social-emotional learning. This style works hard to address feelings of the students so learning can occur. St Andrews in Potomac is the other "responsive classroom" school in the DMV. Middle school is hard for most kids and while there will never be a school where awful behavior does not occur, we have been happy with SR and the way they guide the girls towards showing respect and kindness and fostering community.

7th grade already has 30 kids.

Careful suggesting Burke, don’t you know how exclusive it is?!

The kids are welcoming. Don’t know about numbers for each grade so you need to call (that goes for all schools you are thinking about).

We're one of those families doing just 2 years! New this year, so Yes OP! Call Norwood!

Also - Burke's acceptances weren't what they expected this year. They had to go back for a round 2 on apps. Not sure how that worked out for them.

Yes, sayeth Burke’s name with the utmost caution!

OP here, thanks again everyone. So far we only have 1...maybe 2 possible options, but we've only contacted 5 of the schools suggested here. We'll reach out to the others tomorrow morning.

I’d say having even 1 option is quite fortunate in mid August!

It is, but the reality of admissions is that yield doesn't always work out as planned, and some people do pull out over the summer leaving gaps the schools want to fill. They usually will not, however, go back to the pile they rejected to fill those spots. They hope for a few summer transfers and late applicants who are a better fit than the denied pile, and often they will get that. Some schools even leave a few empty seats because they know they will get a few applicants who moved over the summer, usually from abroad.

And don’t forget Bullis takes EVERYONE. And the word on the street is, psst, it’s the next Big 3 school. Really, it is. Don’t tell anyone!

Honestly if you just need a spot you could try Bullis or WES.

I’d also highly recommend Congressional (and personally know multiple families with kids who entered in the summer rather than during the usual application process), but it does seem like it would be quite a commute for OP, which should definitely be considered. If you have closer options, go with them.
