I wonder which is harder - making sure the tea and crumpets are perfect or ensuring you have enough food for you and your children to eat

OP, I once had afternoon tea at a high-end restaurant that specializes in such events, and they still messed up a bit. Guess what? It was still delicious and elegant and a lovely break in routine. I'm sure your guests felt the same way.
If you want to try again, rehearse first with your family by serving tea instead of a regular lunch or dinner.
