| Well our school told kids today that there are a few kids who were on vacation and are showing up tomorrow (Wednesday) so they will likely bump kids who thought they were clear. |
At our school, there are no juniors or seniors on JV. If you don’t make Varsity, you’re out. Harsh, but there are more than enough talented players to fill both teams. |
| DD's school is the same. No juniors and seniors on JV. It makes sense but I think that they should also have a policy of really minimizing younger players on varsity to leave as many spots for 11th and 12th. |
That sucks. Which school is that? And which school provides backpacks? |
That’s insane! My son told me that there were a few players who couldn’t try out due to injury and were given spots because they had played the previous year and did the summer training. But neither last year or this year was there any mention of kids trying out later and bumping someone. What school is this? |

My kid's school has only Freshmen and Sophomores on JV. The tryouts were rigorous and no nonsense. Yet there were still 1-2 players who were sick or out for the final tryouts who made the team. My kid said they earned the spot through other summer activities though.
I mean, HS sports teams can be competitive, despite the DCUM posters who poo poo them as midling. I think the predominant philosophy of serious coaches is that the better kids need to be on the team, and more time to develop is better. So if a really good Sophomore and a so-so Senior try out, the Sophomore wins that battle. The harder calculation is when you have a very good JV player who could move up, but wouldn't play much. But I trust the coaches to work it out. |
Our HS doesn’t allow seniors on JV but does allow juniors. I’m the one who posted that some sophomores made varsity and some juniors were sent to JV. I didn’t think that was unusual. I know I saw the policy clearly stated somehere prior to tryouts. While I understand wanting to accommodate as many juniors and seniors as possible, it’s no secret that most coaches just care about winning. I feel like HS sports should be more inclusive. If they added freshman no-cut teams there would be more space for everyone. |

I've never understood why MCPS wastes so much money on surveys and useless things instead of doing something that will make a big difference like adding sports teams.
A freshman team would have been so popular at DD's school that they would have had pretty aggressive cuts. |
| I don’t understand what they don’t have freshman teams either. My much smaller mid western hs and freshman teams in soccer (and other sports) and had no problem filling the roster. |
|
Freshman teams cost $$. Uniforms, coaches referees, buses, not to mention time on the field that is already tough to get space on.
Besides, they've got to spend anything additional they get on more central office staff 😉 |
| Yes, field space. We go to a high school with a very small footprint (possibly the smallest) and my kid reports that during the fall it is normal for varsity and JV soccer to share half the field while varsity and JV field hockey share the other half. Cheer gets the space beyond the end zone and cross country gets the track. There is just no other space to practice, even on unmarked/unmaintained grass, on the property. |
| Club teams often get tiny slivers of space on which to practice. Ours even practices on tennis courts sometimes and since that's a spring sport assuming those won't be occupied. There are ways to do this. |
