Not that poster but we are also one of the most educated counties in the nation. So how did we allow the quality of life to degrade so much over the past 20 years? We have brains and money. But apparently not much common sense.

A lot of it comes down to who is elected. The people elected tend to have more extreme left views than the general population, and tend to be from Takoma Park/Silver Spring area. Not a lot of representation from Damascus or Germantown other than the required location-specific Council positions.

Why do they get elected? Because we don't have open primaries, then whoever wins the primary for the Democrats becomes the winner in the general. But a lot of people don't vote in primaries, especially in an off-year (non presidential). To win in the primary you just need to court a few fringe groups who vote in heavy numbers to win. Elrich won the primary with 55,504 votes, ahead of more moderate Blair by 32 votes. In a county of 1 million people and 678,000 registered voters.

Look, I voted for David Blair both times as well but I fail to see how he could have prevented this one guy from ODing in a park in Bethesda.

And you don’t need open primaries, you need ranked choice voting.

We need something different. Because what’s happening now is not working. Between Mark, Ehrlich, and the council it’s just too homogenous of a group. We need different people with different ideas. We need less yes people and more diverse thought I’ve always said it. It’s never good to have a single party rule.

NP. I do hate that these threads always devolve into socially or politically motivated finger pointing. Neither "ODs happen because of the Democrats!" nor "What about West Virginia!" either 1) represent what's actually going on in the country with overdoses or 2) seem like they come from a place of actual concern for people who are dying. my quality of life has risen over the last 20yrs thanks to all the development in Moco. Bethesda is fantastic city. In theory, you would never need to head into DC if you didn't want to. 20 years ago it was definitely quieter, but there wasn't much going on. I still prefer old bethesda vs bethesda row
