Hardy v Deal

Yeah, if you read the insanely long thread after Johnson's dismissal you should know that a new principal isn't enough to draw us to that parent population

My child is going to Deal this coming year. What is the problem with the bathroom?

Weed, vaping, etc. The usual.

The school's solution is to lock all bathrooms but one per gender.
My daughter went straight to the bathroom every day as soon as she got home last year. It works out but it's another quirk of the school.

Did you mean to say go private or elsewhere? Generally speaking, the core curriculum and opportunities for differentiation seem to be the same across Hardy and Deal (e.g., high school courses in algebra and geometry are offered in both, but no advanced ELA). TBH, high performers would probably be fine in either. Some of this will depend on the luck of the draw with teachers. I think the better question is which school offers more support for students at the mid and lower end of the spectrum.

This is a beautiful retort. It displays your ignorance and nastiness in full bloom. In it, you concede that you're not a Hardy parent; hence, you have limited insight into the school. (Your supposed knowledge about the school probably comes entirely from anonymous posts on this forum.) You then attempt to nastily imply the parent population is a problem, not a draw, for Hardy. The attempted implication is built entirely from ignorance. You are merely trying to start fights, like any other internet troll. You probably mock the incels in their basement cheering on Elon Musk, yet you're really no different yourself. Look in the mirror and take account.

I think this is a teacher, not a parent, post.

Parent cohort energy (highly educated , highly involved, high intensity) is not meaningfully different from Deal to Hardy. The teachers who don't value families with this feature set will, obviously, not be drawn to it.

I don't think I could've done nearly as good of a job as you did in illuminating the parent problem at Hardy

Hardy. I saw a comment about being concerned about the IB at Deal and not being to switch later. I have child in a true IB program. Having had a child at Deal I can tell you it is not a true IB program and you really don’t need to worry about that as a factor. They will be able to switch seemlessly if it comes to that.

OP here with a few more questions...
Can anyone from Deal comment on how much kids stick to friend groups from their own school v other schools? DC is now (in the 11th hour) upset about not going to Hardy and about how everyone at Deal will already have a friend group from their feeder school. Which I can understand. NOt sure how much I can reassure them that people will be looking for new friends along with their old ones.
If distance were the same I'd send them to Hardy, but there's an option for public transportation to Deal and not to Hardy. Seems like that will make a big difference for me, timewise, and would give them more independence.

Depends on the kid. Mine stuck with her elementary school friends for 6th grade, but many of her classmates from the same school did not. Your kid will definitely be able to make new friends.

Your kid will make new friends! My daughter was in a tight friend group of 6 kids at Janney and none of the rest matriculated on to Deal. So even though she was in a feeder school, she had to make all new friends. It was a non-issue--the kids all re-shuffle.

Every MS in the area and likely everywhere has the exact same set of issues with bathrooms. They're all struggling to find the youndr pouches of clean bathrooms - a realistic solution to a ubiquitous problem.

no insight on the Deal v Hardy question, but FWIW I fully back you on the transportation and independence priority. And independence should also help them make friends.

It is very common for friends groups to shift during the middle school years, and there are 1400 kids going through that shuffle at Deal, so making new friends should not be a problem. The key is to join something.

That's a bit of an overstatement. My kid transferred to an independent school and they do not fear the bathrooms and the halls are not chaotic with adults shouting at students at every corner.
