Good mattress topper for college dorm?

If your kid uses a mattress topper (and mattress pad? mattress cover?) do regular twin xl sheets fit over all of this, or do you need to buy the extra deep sheets?

At DC’s school the mattresses are only 6” high so regular sheets fit over everything.

I don’t think the mattress encase is necessary. They aren’t regular mattresses. They are already covered with plastic. We just added the mattress topper and a waterproof mattress cover (it was deep enough for both the mattress and pad - the mattresses are very thin). Did this for four colleges are all mattresses were basically the same.

Did your kids wash the mattress cover every time they washed sheets? I am sending my first to college this fall, a boy, and I have a hard time picturing him washing sheets regularly much less also removing and washing a mattress cover (although he should!).

Does anyone have one they would recommend for a non- air conditioned dorm room? Foam or gel? Are any of these mattress toppers really cooling? Amazon links appreciated as I want to buy during Prime Day.

I would choose latex, cotton or foam over gel, for odors and chemicals. Fwiw

Highly doubt they washed the mattress cover and that was the very least of my concerns!

DS is using a 2” gel topper (twin size) with a twin xl mattress pad over it. Twin xl sheets, twin comforter.

He is very happy with it, but is in an AC dorm this summer.

I think I bought a 2 inch topper - it made it even more difficult to change the sheets since my DS was in a tiny room, had to loft his bed sky high, and really couldn't take the mattress off to change bedding (no space). But I guess it was worth it for sleeping purposes for the 9 months of his life he was in a twin xl bed.

I hate to think of how many of these things go in a landfill when kids move off campus but I can't blame the schools for not purchasing luxury mattresses for dorms.

3rd child going to college this Fall. We do a 3 inch cooling mattress topper (my kids run hot), zip that up with the mattress in the bed bug protector (for us, this is more about ease of chaging sheets and less about bed hugs, because if they are in the dorm, your screwed). Then a mattress topper and sheets. When it's laundry time, mostly just sheets, occausionally mattress topper and sheets (depends on the kid)

What brand of cooling mattress topper? A lot of the reviews say that they cooling ones are still hot.
