Real electors can choose someone else, depending on the state laws. Some states have laws that "bound" electors to the general election winner and other states allow the elector to freely decide. Fake electors can't choose anyone because they are illegal, both under state and federal laws. And it's a crime to submit a forged phony elector ascertainment certificate to the Archivist of the United States. |
SCOTUS came down with a decision between in 2020 that made this impossible. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-rules-faithless-electors-can-t-go-rogue-electoral-n1231394 |
There is a difference between articulating an idea and planning and staging a coordinated effort across many states and thousands of people to actually stage a coup. There were people who protested an individual state here and there over the years, mostly to articulate grievances around voter suppression, but of course the GOP equates that with what happened on 1/6 as the same thing. No, it wasn't. |
Depends on the state: “ and must vote as the laws of their states direct, the Supreme Court ruled Monday.” |
That’s an opinion, not a given |
DP. Yes, it is. As a conservative-leaning moderate who has voted both R and D in the past, I am appalled at how many men women of formerly-good-character have minimized, both sidesed, whatabouted, or straight up defended the failed insurrection. Avoiding addressing it or changing the subject is understandable; it's a painful subject. But justifying it, arguing that it wasn't so bad or that the other guys did it too? Shameful. |
1. There were no Democratic electors from states that Trump won who fraudulently claimed that Clinton won their state. What the fake Trump electors did was completely different and fraudulent. 2. The 2016 effort was targeted to persuade defections from Republican electors chosen by their state Republican Party and pledged to support the Republican nominee, who won their state, so it was a futile dumbass idea, but not fraud. |
|
They had plenty of notice. The state party chair refused to go along. Two of the nominated electors refused to go along and were replaced by alternates. One of the electors who refused was a former Secretary of State. Anybody who knows anything about elections knew it was fraud. |
It would not have been fraud if they had succeeded. The difference between insurrection and revolution is success. Or failure. |

This is an interesting way to deal with this.
“In a legal settlement Wednesday, the 10 Republicans who signed official-looking paperwork falsely purporting Donald Trump won Wisconsin in 2020 have agreed to withdraw their inaccurate filings, acknowledge Joe Biden won the presidency and not serve as presidential electors in 2024 or in any election where Trump is on the ballot. Wednesday’s civil settlement marks the first time pro-Trump electors have agreed to revoke their false filings and not repeat their actions in the next presidential election. It comes as Republicans in two other states face criminal charges for falsely claiming to be presidential electors, and investigations are underway in three additional states.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/12/06/wisconsin-trump-fake-electors-lawsuit/ |
| Meh, they should still spend some time in the pokey. |
|
In short: the fake Trump electors in WI, without admitting they lied, acknowledge that Biden won the election and agreed to withdraw their false filings.
Any GOP supporters care to chime in? Do you still believe Trump won? Will you believe the outcome of the election if he loses again the next time around? |
