Marshall games the US News ratings by making kids take IB English. But for that ploy, Madison would be rated above Marshall.

Langley and McLean have more high performing Asian kids than either Madison or Marshall = top ratings.

Asian kids in general make it difficult to tell of a school is good. I only say this is I went to a heavy Asian HS that was terrible yet top 50 in country. They all had tutors, SAT/ACT coaches, professional college essay writers, did not work at all during HS and studied around the clock. The teachers sucked and it was hidden from stats

Asians know Vienna has a lot of racist white people who care more about sports than academics.

I’m Asian and don’t know what you’re talking about. I live in Great Falls and would feel a lot more at home and aligned with the white people of Vienna than the white people of Bethesda who are making “vibe” comments from earlier in this thread.

I think the point was that Madison is equal or better than schools in Bethesda in response to comment claiming that Bethesda schools focus on academics more than Madison does. I do agree that the Bethesda monologue, including this claim, was a bit delusional.

In any event, Marshall, Langley, McLean, and Madison are the four high schools that cover Vienna (so where your children go depends on where you are within Vienna). So the idea that somehow schools in Vienna are academically inferior than Bethesda schools is delusional (if anything they are better, but I personally think saying “on par” is more appropriate because you can’t go wrong with Bethesda or Vienna schools if you are a good parent).

Vienna kids are zoned to Madison, Marshall, Oakton, Langley, South Lakes, and Falls Church, depending on the address.

Only Langley is on par with the Bethesda schools.

False but something tells me you’re not going to care that it’s false.

It’s in our culture. I’m second generation and am wanting the same for my kids who will be in Langley soon. Not sure why it’s bad or changes anything. Good and bad teachers are everywhere. I think the biggest factor of the quality of a public school is in the parents of the kids that attend that school. I want my kids to be in an environment where their friends have parents who also care for them as much as I do and push them to achieve more.

Town of Vienna does have a small town feel. The type of place where 9 times out of 10 I run into someone walking to the store or library.

Maple ave and its nonstop traffic have as much a small town vibe as Fairfax, Burke or any other nearby area with strip malls. The few blocks of church st / center st have a bit of small town feel with the cute stores and coffee shops, it’s comparable to del ray. Unless you live right there walking distance, not sure how much difference that makes.

For what it’s worth I grew up in Vienna, moved to McLean and never lived in Bethesda.

Except it is not supposed to be your job. I switched school districts from a very blue collar first generation immigrant town and teachers were wonderful. They did it all and changed lives. My higher ranked more Asian school the parents did all the work boosted scores and teachers took credit.

Less taxes in Virginia. Although the there are additional local taxes if you live in the town of Vienna.
Traffic is not great on Maple.

I've lived in both towns. As a single person, I'd go with Bethesda. For family, and the large savings in taxes, I'd go Vienna.

But please don't move to Virginia if you're just going to vote in woke Liberals who will raise our taxes. If you love paying taxes, stay in Maryland.

Different POC, but I know what pp is talking about. It's different than nearby Great Falls or McLean.

So send them to private school or TJ. Langley isn’t going to do something special.

Used to live in Vienna. It’s just another suburb with worse congestion than most (Maple Avenue is hell), an utterly conformist feel, and an obsession with youth sports.

Can you elaborate?

That took a turn.

Bethesda is near some of the nicest neighborhoods in DC like Spring Valley, The Palisades, and Barnaby Woods and near Chevy Chase and Potomac in Maryland. Being in the middle of the nicest region in the area (Upper NW, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Potomac) is preferable to being between Tysons Corner and Fairfax City imo, but your mileage may vary.

Talk about taxes, job access, the lack of the amount of retail that Tysons offers to your heart’s content. It doesn’t change the fact that Bethesda is just a more aesthetically pleasing place in a much more desirable cluster of neighborhoods. I’d rather pay more taxes to live in a nicer area; I can telework so job access doesn’t matter as much as it used to; and Tysons is a 15 minute drive from a lot of Bethesda neighborhoods on the weekends.

I kind of agree with this, except that most of MoCo isn’t very nice any longer and you end up propping up the rest of the county more if you live in Bethesda than is the case if you live in Vienna because there are more affluent areas in Fairfax now. Not something to ignore completely if you’re considering the two locations.
