How to choose events for summer dual meets?

I have to say, every league has quirks and issues, but MCSL feels so much more transparent than NVSL. I like they post the all star list each week and full meet results (including kids who didn’t place).

Both systems are fine with me

We want to do this because we know one kid is very close and beating an A meet swimmer in some strokes but we can only see our own times online. Can’t see anyone else’s

We are in NVSL. And doesn’t help that we have the same thing but it’s only A meet and everyone can only swim 2 strokes in A meets.

Your team doesn't circulate a ladder? Our team does after each meet.

Or even if they don’t circulate the ladder, they never provide the results of a meet, they only give each kid their own times? This doesn’t make any sense. I’m aware of some teams that don’t circulate the ladder, but I’m not aware of any that don’t provide complete meet results.

Agree! Curious if any teams provide the meet sheet with times before the meet? We were told it was an NVSL rule that they can’t but I can’t find it. Plus, that seems ridiculous since 90% of the kids have times on the NVSL website.

NVSL publishes the result of all meets too. Just go to the Schedule/Results tab on mynvls.com. You can easily see who is in the running for All Stars by using the 'Leaders' tab.

B meets aren't published on the NVSL website because B meets aren't part of NVSL.

Again, what’s the “ladder”? My kids have been swimming for three years and I’ve never heard this before.

It's a list of the kids in each age group and in each stroke from fastest to slowest with their times listed.

Never heard of a ladder before. But based on what you are describing, in the swim world we call this a "Top Times Report"

Yes, "ladder" is shorthand for top times report. Called ladder because you're trying to climb to the top of the list.

B meets aren't published on the NVSL website because B meets aren't part of NVSL.

MCSL doesn’t publish the B meet results either, but it’s commonplace that the teams circulate the final meet results to the swimmers, so between that and the published results of the A meets you can figure out where you are on the ladder even if the ladder itself isn’t circulated.

its not a nvsl rule in the sense that it is not in the rulebook. However, the NVSL instructions for how to prepare a meet do say very explicitly to only provide the meet sheet with times to the team reps and coaches, and everyone else gets a meet sheet without seed times. I agree that its silly. The results are all published. So a motivated person can largely fill in their own 'seed times.' I suspect that someone inserted this into the 'instructions' and its never come out- despite the fact that you can search up any a meet swimmer by their name and get all their times.

The fact that they won’t provide a heat sheet/meet program before meets that shows everyone’s seed times is ridiculous. It makes it look like they are trying to slide kids into A meet slots even if they don’t have the fastest times. Swimming is an individual timed sport (even with the pseudo team set up of summer swim) and there is no reason for this type of lack of transparency.

The teams in the division vote, or come to a consensus. Most divisions choose to not print the times, but it’s not a steadfast NVSL rule.

What a strange consensus - what is the rational, do you know? MCSL 'A' and 'B' meets have a program/heat sheets w/ seed times provided in advance. I think most, if not all club meets have the same. Very odd that this is not also done in NVSL.

A lot of teams chose to not share the team ladder because there are parents who will decide that they know better than the head coach and start debating the line up for A meets. It is a headache coaches and team reps don’t want to deal with. And yes the fastest kids always get to swim but if the same kid is the fastest in all 4 strokes and can only do 2 on Saturday those two events may change week to week based on match ups which impacts which swimmer who is lower on the ladder also gets an opportunity to race week to week….

This doesn’t make sense to me. This happens all the time at our MCSL pool and probably most pools (kid fastest in 4 strokes so the coach has to make a call on what 3 they can swim) and it is actually easier to explain with seed times because you can see the data of why a coach would make the call they are. Also, if there is no data then the coach is left to defend each and every decision, not just those where he/she made judgment calls about which events to choose.

Coach decides. However, my 15-18y swimmer asked to do fly every week because he is using his times for a school project in the fall.
