MacArthur High School opens 11 weeks from today

Back to the question at hand. At the rate they’ve been coming from my family going there for our sons soccer game, it doesn’t look like it from what I can tell from looking in the windows.

As of last Saturday, they now have security and armed guards as folks were vandalizing the property and allowing their dogs to take over the athletic field.

and after the wilson/JR renaming fiasco DCPS isn't going to pick a person to name the school unless a political does it for them (so the councilmember/mayor takes the heat)

I don't think frumin or bowser care (they are the only two with a say since it is in ward 3). i think they are the macarthur mammoths for the foreseeable future unless a group creates a big campaign otherwise.

though to be honest, it is weird to have a school named after general MacArthur. Would've preferred Western, Palisades, or Conduit High (what MacArthur Blvd was called historically)

Yeah MacArthur has what they'd call a "complicated legacy."

They should name it Eisenhower 🙂

what’s the point??

Omg. Americans are so dumb. It's the third most common language in the European Union, and is a required language in many Latin American countries...because....Italians...traveled...and emigrated. It's an official language in several countries and a widely-spoken one in many more. It's one of the most widely studied languages in the world...I am sure had a drunken honeymoon in Venice and fancy yourself an authority. It's also mutually intelligible with Spanish, and given the number of ESL students in DC who speak Spanish as a mother tongue, probably more easily acquired.

Anyone who thinks Italian should be offered instead of languages such as Chinese, French, Arabic or Russian is either not serious or an idiot.

I travel all over the world for work. There are many languages I’ve cursed myself for not having learned. Never once have I come upon a need to know any Italian.

Yep. Americans are dumb.

Parents of kids attending: Let us know what you think! Anyone know if DC is planning more high schools in the nearish future? Or is this if for awhile?

Looking forward to hearing what the kids' and the parents' first impressions are!

I'm interested in how the commute worked for students from CP and WP.

I was deeply, deeply skeptical DCPS/DGS would be able to get it done and open functionally.

I was in the building yesterday. They made it. There are still some minor things to address, but the building looks relatively new. The kitchen and cafeteria just emerged from the rubble in the last month or two it seems.

Same. Is everyone just driving to this utterly inaccessible school?

The school cleared their 9th grade waitlist (presumably, in part, because it's impossible to get to).

I live nearby. Things I have heard from my ANC and other officials:
* Enrollment is 260, 200 9th graders and 60 10th graders, which is exactly what was projected when the lottery started.
* They did a survey of incoming families and got 170 responses. 47 families expected to drive.
* Traffic on MacArthur Boulevard was not noticeably heavier.

Does anyone know how many seats went to oob kids?

The Palisades Trolley Trail goes directly behind the school. I'd like to make the new HS more bikeable and more walkable.
Here is a blog I wrote about it a few years back.

We want to restore the Foundry Branch Bridge

I'd like to do a walk with the students and parents of the Palisades, Georgetown and Glover Archbold park to show them how we could reuse the trolley path and bridge to get the students to the HS via biking and cycling to it.
There were a few people here last year that were interested.
Thoughts are welcomed.
We are thinking about doing a walk in October.
