My understanding of the tentative “plan” - such as it is - is that they will develop different programs so that kids will be assigned to one building.

Possible examples: Larlo is in the Arts Something Program. His classes are in the MH building - except for AP German, which is only in the main building. Larla and her BFF Karla are in the STEM and XYZ programs, respectively, based at the King St campus.

Wouldn’t most kids pick the programs in the state of the art brand new building with swimming pool and other nice features? Maybe students will have to rank their choices to balance the populations.

Is that ideal? Do we really want hundreds of students walking from one campus to another from 8 am until 3 pm every day? Have you seen those students navigate that intersection? It will likely lead to chaos and additional safety issues, not to mention what it may well do to commuters who drive through that busy intersection.

It would make more sense to have two fully-functioning high schools and to build one of them in the West End, in my opinion.

Maybe ACPS will build a pedestrian bridge or utilize flashing school zone lights to make the walk easier and safer. I hope they allow 20 minutes or so between classes to account for the long walk.

One perk is it will be a lot more convenient for students to grab lunch at the Bradlee Shopping Center.

NP what? Why are kids allowed to leave during school?!

I thought ACHS already had open campus for lunch, resulting in the safety problems at The Bradlee Shopping Center? It will have to be open campus with kids walking between both school campuses throughout the day.

I did just read that students will be allowed to eat anywhere in the new school building in what ACPS calls the “Creative Commons.”

ACHS’s “Connected High School Network” or CHSN will also host dozens of new interdisciplinary learning communities that will require walking between the school campuses.

Here’s information on the rationale for the one high school one city model and the “pinwheel” concept for ACHS. It seems like the city supports this model wholeheartedly, more or less. It’s a huge investment.

What a huge waste of time to have kids traveling from campus to campus unsupervised instead of just appearing the two schools.

ACPS wants all high school students to benefit from the CHSN aka Connected High School Network. Why should only some students get to use the state of the art facilities? That would not be equitable.

I bet within three to five years, MH and ACHS would be "connected" in name only. All the students who, as people have posted here before, "are in AP and never see the violence" will just all be in the new building. The segregation that goes on now needs to be out in the open.

The mayor, city council, school board and ACPS and voters don't want to take the steps that are necessary to put an end to the gangs (they won't even say the word as though "crews" changes anything) and the violence. Doing that doesn't align with their political beliefs and that is what is important.

Can you imagine how unsafe that bridge would be?
