Targets are a challenge for high stats kids, because all of the schools that are one or two notches less insanely competitive than the Ivy+ schools - like Tufts or BC - themselves admit a fairly low percentage of applicants. And some of the ones with less daunting admissions rates, like Tulane or Wake, are really heavy on ED. In OP's shoes, I'd forget about the Hail Mary reaches and try to ED at a target school.
That isn't consistent with merit, but most of the target schools the OP mentioned and have been suggested here don't offer merit aid. If merit is the priority, the OP should be pushing her kid toward safeties already on her list or those mentioned here. |

For our son at a private in DC
Those were his safeties recommended by counselor at school University of Maryland William and Mary Indiana Penn state U mass in Amherst |
Why is Pitt always given as a safety. I’ve been told it’s a wonderful school, by the way. also in a fun city that the kids love |
+1 It does depend on the major, though. STEM/theater related majors - it would be a reach. As an aside, I find it so interesting that CMU is great for two dichotomous majors - STEM and theater. |
My DC is at a Big3 with a 3.1 GPA and 32ACT and was accepted this year to Syracuse RD. Definitely a target or even a safety for OP with “great grades”. |
My kid was in the same boat. Outside of T20 T25, hard to beat Northeastern. |
CMU has always been this way, but most engineering schools have been investing in the arts and theater spaces. There is more cross over than you might guess, and many STEM fields require creative minds. RIT just built a huge theater complex and many engineering schools have strong music programs. |

Just giving suggestions, not "chance me"
McGill - although already mentioned Trinity in CT Another vote for Tufts based on stated interests Emory Syracuse should be safe Definitely search using intended major because you want a good program regardless of school. Can't speak on bio but you want quality psych & history. Check the professors. For history, political alignment with their values might matter. |
Most of the private schools don't even use the concept "safeties" anymore. The schools that are still operating with this mindset are the ones that are disappointed in their outcomes. |
NE is a waste of time unless op applies ED. And op has better options for ED. |
If it's one of the best fit (based on the description), I would apply EA. |

A few thoughts from another private school parent-
If your school is pushing slacs, your kid is not as strong an applicant as you think in the current admissions environment. Private schools still have very strong feeder relationships with slacs so they are promoting these schools because that’s where they think she has the best chance of admittance. Given this, you are likely aiming too high with the bigger universities. Probably should be looking at schools like Tulane, BU, NE, Wisco, maybe Miami. These schools all strongly prefer applicants who ED. You don’t mention test scores. Unhooked private school students often can get away with being test optional at slacs. The T25 universities for the most part are going to want to see test scores from this demographic. What is the extracurricular that you think sets her apart? |
Except NO CAMPUS |
BU doesn't have a real campus like NUY. ED to reach school, then ED2 to Northeastern sounds like a plan. |
