Safeties/ matches please....

Rochester, Case Western, Villanova, Carnegie Mellon as targets (maybe a slight reach).

Agree with Pitt. How about American as a target?

My child is a junior at a big 3 with GREAT grades and a strong kind of unique extracurricular. Otherwise unhooked, we can swing full pay and have saved up, but merit somewhere would be amazing. Our kid likes a medium to large sized school in an urban/city area but with a campus i.e Columbia not NYU. A big fun college town can work too.

High Reaches: Princeton, Yale, Duke, Northwestern (I know these are basically impossible will choose one or two to try)
More reaches Wesleyan, Emory , Michigan, Cornell
Target: Wisconsin, University of Toronto, Syracuse
Safety? UVM? Colorado? Indiana

Please help with targets and safeties (though we are very aware there seem to be no true safeties these days)- Are there medium sized schools 5000-8000 kids we are missing?

Yes -we asked our College Office is suggesting a lot of slac's and they are too small or too rural. I know everything is random and difficult to predict.

Hoping the great DCUM hive mind will have some suggestions! Thanks in advance.

Curious how you came to decide upon Wesleyan which doesn't seem to jive with size or city preferences. Burlington and Bloomington also have less than 100k residents.

OP here good point- but tor kid felt the Burlington was a cute town (we visited). Agree about location of Wes. and size but it was a little bigger than the other SLACS so it's on the long list to look at.

And to the other PP, the snarky person who asked why we are asking the DCUM group- I already addressed that. Yes- I am paying $50,000K and was flummoxed by the list provided by our college office. Are you happy now? What is your excuse for lurking, reading the post, then needing to be mean and unhelpful?

I have actually found there to many nice supportive people with great knowledge bases on DCUM, so I wanted to hear from them. Thanks for the good suggestions from many of you so far- Major: probably Psychology or biology but maybe history. Kid is still undecided.

So you have a girl.

Syracuse is not a target anymore. I’d definitely add another school to your targets.

Anonymous
OP, no one can answer your broad question without more information.
Anonymous
University of Richmond, Lehigh, University of Denver, University of San Diego and University of San Francisco for mid-size with all targets except the last one being a safety.
Anonymous
I will add Lehigh is a good choice if not clear on major because it has strong STEM and humanities and they have flexibility on changing your major.

Please go to college confidential- that community has been super helpful and doesn’t veer off into weird angry tangents.

Interesting out CO said it was a safety bc our kid is high stats, but I did not agree and moved it to match.

yeah good luck with that. come back when he's got his offers and you can crow as much as you like. right now it's meaningless

It's not that hard to get into University of Toronto --even for American students. Looks like a target to me based on the other schools listed as targets. It's harder to get into University of Michigan out of state than it is to get into the University of Toronto as an American.

Excellent list

Going to need to ED at Tufts or BC.

This. Not only has the BC acceptance rate dropped under 20% in the last few years, there is a big difference in acceptance rates between ED and RD so it could be a target for ED but a reach if you apply RD.

Matches: BC, Wash U, Rochester, McGill, Case (gd merit), Barnard, ?Holy Cross or Brandeis, Univ of Washington

Safeties: American, Reed, Fordham, Lewis & Clark

I would put most of those "matches" in the reach category. Their acceptance rates are too low to be matches.

Carnegie Mellon is not really a target for anyone
i think its a reach for most.

Is she willing to do ED to any of the reaches? Particularly Wesleyan or Emory would make it easier but even northwestern or dukes at least is ED. What about U wash? Or UMinn? Any interest in doing Pitt as early? Villanova

Dcum seems to be pretty good source to me as lots of people here who just went through it. Good luck!

Not true - I know at least three kids who were accepted to BC during RD from my kid’s Big3.
