Mixed use trail/path etiquette for everyone

I'M YELLING ON PURPOSE!!!!

I have nothing positive to say about the Cyclists who use the mixed paths around NOVA. NOTHING POSITIVE. Let's keep it at that.

I am 100% in agreement with you here. Anybody exceeding 12mph on a bike should not be using any of the "bike paths" around our area.

I am 100% not interested in riding a bike at 12mph. That is why I am willing to tangle with cars. Its a numbers game, and I am very self-aware. If some asshat wants to "buzz me" because they have some issue with people riding their ridiculous bikes long distances at high speed with goofy looking kit on, that's cool. I only ended up getting blown into a ditch once, and off the road a few times, no major accidents. I have had friends die in accidents. But, it is what it is.

That said, I suspect you have some other latent issue with people on bikes. You probably lament how anybody could want to go out with their friends for 100 miles in one day. After all, they must be pretending. They really should just sit in front of the TV instead of working on their cardio engine.

Sometimes I'm a cyclist. Sometimes I'm a runner. I have a dog and little kids.

I agree with a lot here.

The people who scare/hurt/kill others on trails/paths will NEVER care. They are not reading this thread and they're laughing if they are.

I think how people behave on paths strongly correlates to how people drive, and vice versa.

The person on the wrong side of the path, is the same clueless person going slow in the left lane.

The person who lets their dog go all over the place and not trained to stay right by their side, is the same person who leaves their cart in the middle of the aisle. Or worse, brings their pet to a grocery store.

The same person glued to their phone (by themselves or while walking their dog) is the same ahole driving and texting.

Cyclist here (who is also a mom walking my kid in a stroller, and a runner, so I'm playing both sides!). When I don't thread the needle, the people in front of me hate it. It's like tailgating a car. Even if I am super slow and courteous. I find that the most polite and safe thing to do in 90% of situations on multi-use paths is to get out of other people's way as soon as possible. Sometimes that means passing them.

I will add, I am always patient and make my presence very obvious to people with kids; they are unpredictable and I would 100% swerve into a fall to avoid colliding with a kid. But people with dogs shouldn't be on multi-use trails if their dog cannot heel/stay to the right.

Bump - people need a refresher

Also parents, please teach your kids to stop leaving scooters in the middle of sidewalks, paths, or parked where people need street parking.

And the cyclists with the bright blinking lights or high beams - WHY. PLEASE STOP BLINDING PEOPLE.

Can we also add that the person with the toughest moment gets the priority? If someone is running up a hill, and you are walking, please move over. You get the priority on the downhill.

Also, please keep your pups on a leash. I'm dog obsessed, but I know my dog will chase a runner, and I don't want to be surprised chased by your dog.
