Are Letterman jackets still a thing?

I think it's more of a private school thing. Same with the jackets. My son's school has a ring ceremony and dance. Mine did too. They also have the jackets although only certain students can get them. My son got a few letters but I think only state championship activities can get the jackets.

My daughter is a three sport varsity athlete at an FCPS high school and none of the kids on any of those three teams wear letter jackets. I vaguely remember seeing one of the football players with one. But that’s the only one I’ve ever seen at her school.

Let's bring them back, I loved mine!!

Yes, the absolutely wear them. Not in the numbers "back in the day" when I was in school. But there are still plenty that do.

Where? I’ve been teaching high school for over 20 years in two different states and haven’t seen any. I’ve never seen any of my own kid’s friends wear them either. Is this a private school thing?

Nope. Northern VA publics.

Exactly. Letter jackets haven’t been a thing since the 80s in the public schools. The letter sweaters died out in the 70s. At least in this area. A few still purchase but rarely wear then.

Letter jackets were popular at my fcps high school in the late 90s.

The post you're responding to says the opposite. Kids at our NOVA public (in the Fairfax area) def wear letter jackets.

I see the Damascus kids wearing them with their letters. My high school wore them and all the HS's around us but I lived in Illinois.

And at our NOVA public HS (not far from Fairfax area), the only ones I've ever seen in six years of having a kid there are a handful of football players two years ago. My DDs coach even joked during their banquet about how maybe all these kids getting letters might bring jackets back, because they're absolutely not a thing at our school.

Yeah, maybe in this area, but I went to high school in Southern CA in the 90s and they absolutely were a thing. Pretty much everyone who earned a letter bought a jacket and wore it regularly.

Yes!! My Los Angeles county high school in late 90s definitely had them and the cool, popular kids wore them.

I feel like all jackets are barely a thing at all anymore, coats too LOL.

When was this?

Depends on the sport. Mine didn’t even offer them.
