It's fine if you prefer Alsobrooks- but the whole "hes rich, he's white, he's a man" is just absurd.

Why is it dumb?

You think its a smart take to bag on someone for being succesful in business?

I’m not PP but it does not translate into being good in Senate it just means he had enough money to run.

Curious as to why? I don’t know anything about him.

Yes, because as a many who is a many times millionaire, he is distanced from the middle class and does not really know or understand the perspective of 90% of his constituency. He has shown a pattern for the last two decades that he is willing to throw money at problems. He believes that money is the way to solve politics and he has invested millions of his own money to influence politics over the last 20+ years. How can you expect that someone like this will truly understand and legislate on behalf of the interests of the middle and underclasses when he has never been a part of that group and has shown he has no understanding of how they live and how laws affect them.

Only if you support the terrible idea that white cis males are better qualified to make legislative decisions for everyone.

The point is not that he's not qualified, but that we need a diversity of opinion in our national Legislature to have more equal representation and viewpoint when making national decisions that affect everyone. Electing "yet another rich white man" is copping out on trying to ensure that we have equal representation and opinions in the US Congress. Since incumbents tend to have an advantage when going for reelection, this is our one chance to change the representation for Maryland in the US Congress. Chris Van Hollen is only 64, and is likely to stay for another 15ish years, so we may not have another chance to change our representation for quite a while.

So, I think it is very important to get someone other than YARWM, so I don't think it is at all absurb to discount him because he represents just another part of the problem. I think it is actually very important to vote to change that pattern now.

So we should choose a worse candidate for the sake of diversity, even if the more diverse candidate makes everyone worse off?

This is an interesting idea.

I don't much about his background, but he appears to be largely self-made and grew up on a farm that eventually went bankrupt. Who are you to claim he doesn't understand the problems of the middle and lower classes?

Haha. “He has shown he has no understanding of how they live and how laws affect them.” How has he shown this exactly? We’re waiting…

Why does race have to do anything with understanding the problems of 90% of Marylanders? If anything, Jawando has shown himself to be the most tone deaf of anyone.

In addition to the family farm, his parents owned a store. When his parents split, his father took the farm (and went bankrupt), but his mother took the store and the paid for Trone to go to college and then to the Wharton Business school at UPenn, which is not a cheap program. After business school, his mother's store had made enough money that Trone was able to set up his own beer distribution store. That store turned into Total Wine. So, yes, he built his empire, but the fact that he had enough starting capital right out of college to start a business, and not only a business, but one that is expensive to start (alcohol licenses and the inventory for alcohol stores are expensive).

Prior to going into politics himself, he spent millions of dollars on political campaigns. When he ran the first time (unsuccessfully) for Congress, he spent $13M of his own money to do so. The second time he ran, he spent more than that. He started the company now know as Total Wine & More in 1984 and within ten years, he was donating millions of dollar to philanthropy causes. So, for the last 30 years, he's been donating millions. When he entered Congress, he was one of the wealthiest members of Congress (top 30 of 435 members).

Exactly. He strikes me as a manipulating snake.

Maryland just elected for governor a guy who totally lied about where he was from and where he grew up because he wanted to have the street-cred associated with saying he was from Baltimore. So let's skip any pretense that understanding the problems of Marylanders is really a key trait. I want someone who is smart and will be savvy about playing the games needed to succeed in the Senate. The republicans are snakes, and we need people who can battle them at their dirty games.

So he was raised by a single mother who was a small business owner and did well?

I am not going to hold that against him.

The progressive strategy of the identity-based everything and the oppression Olympics is a losing strategy. Telling that all the posts here are attacking him for being a successful businessman instead of his policies.

David Trone is a great choice for Senate. He’s a self made individual, and is perfect for embodying the can-do attitude of Marylanders. He’s had an amazingly productive term in Congress, accomplishing in just two years what often takes other Representatives a decade or more. It makes sense to send him to the Senate. He’s earned it.

Thanks, David, for chiming in.
