Are rules of the road I think in the past?

I’m all for the slower people keeping generally to the right lane(s), but the current trend toward even having laws that insist people be swerving all over the place to prevent “cruising” is stupid and dangerous.

On a related note, I don’t get where people think I should move (unsafely) to a crowded right lane when there’s a free one to the left of them.

Not to mention people flashing their lights and even honking in the right lane at vehicles already above the speed limit.

You too. Please read this. And calmly changing lanes when you’re finished passing is not “swerving all over the place.”

I was thinking more of the preposterous “move over” laws, but I guess you do most of your driving on pretty country lanes. Because the places I drive, the likelihood of me being able to “calmly change lanes when I’m finished passing” without risking my life is pretty much zero most of the time.

Think about it: the beltway has 4 lanes. The right one is supposed to be bumper to bumper for miles regardless whether traffic is already above the speed limit so that people in a hurry to get nowhere can weave back and forth across the other three?

Significant speed differentials between lanes are incredibly dangerous.

Perhaps you’re not equipped to drive on 495 if changing lanes is life threatening for you. Stay home Grandma

Happy motoring.

And then there are left-lane drivers that drive 5mph below the speed limit. Just in case. So if you aren't going the speed limit in the left lane, move right.

I have driven in Germany quite a lot. One key difference the cars are much better maintained and cars are required to be in brand new condition regardless of age to pass inspection. A rust spot, scratch, torn seat anything you fail. The cars are inspected to assume they are capable of driving at high rates of speed for long hours. Also slower moving trucks are common and keep to right noses with very high speeds in left lane.

In the left lane you must yield to faster cars. A Ferrari, V8 Mercedes SL, high end Porsche approaching in left lane the slower vehicle must get over. You need to watch rear view mirror a lot.

I was on highway when a lane of large US military vehicles in far right driving 45-50 mph, we were in company bus going 50-55 in next lane, 190sl, VWs in next lane and far left high end cars cooking. There can be a 100mph difference between cars on same high way.

I got so into it I bought a used 2 seater Mercedes V8 SL. In Germany the saying The Star guarantees right of way. Meaning high end Mercedes the Mercedes Star signaling SL the fast model cars need to pull out of left lane when one approaches.

The next summer after getting my Mercedes SL I got up very early Saturday morning to go to my vacation place and driving by myself in empty highway at around 80 mph. A Lexus gets on highway and in left lane tail gates me. Damn highway empty. I know my right of way is guaranteed by birth so I don’t pull over and increase speed till I get to 120 mph. The SOB highbeamed me at 120 mph. Took a quick look road empty just around sunrise I floored it. Damn SL tranny shifted to fifth gear around 125 mph and I heard the chirp of tires. Yes tired spun at 125 mph and I pull away up to 145 mph before I “scared for life” slowed it down to 90 mph. Damm Lexus then pulls around me to right, salutes me and gives thumbs up and gets behind me.

Only time went that fast. But to be honest my Mercedes SL at 120 mph was begging me to punch it up.

On a highway with 3 or more lanes in one direction, driver's ed and the 5-hour course says right lane is slower/ merging/ exiting, middle is/ are travel lane(s), and left is passing. I stay in the middle lane and go at least the speed limit and usually more. If people want to pass me on the right illegally, that is their choice.

If you are going the speed limit, you should not be in the left lane.

I was in the middle lane, usually passing people but when I looked to move right to move over again there was a consistent line of cars passing in that lane. Then swerving to get around a slow car and going back to the right lane to sped up again.

I am happy to move over, again lived in Germany for years and take nothing personal about someone wanting to pass. It was difficult to move over to the right lane because of all of the people passing from that lane agree with PP who said the right is the new left lane.

Clearly you were still going too slow. Speed up or people will pass however they can

You are illegally blocking traffic so people have to go around you.

Driving in the travel lane at or above the speed limit is completely legal. People can pass on the left in the passing lane, or on the right if they want. Either way it has nothing to do with me.

Yes, I am keeping right by traveling in the travel lane. People can pass in the passing lane.

ALL lanes are the travel lane, and slower traffic keeps right. You can (and will) get a ticket in some States for it.

This.

If you're on a 4 way highway, the speeds are staggered. Right lane = speed limit. 2nd from the right = 5-10 faster. 3rd lane = pretty fast. Far left = passing lane.

JFC. This is why DC traffic sucks. If you’re being passed on both sides you’re going too slow. Move the f over.

Got a code cite on that one? Because the last time I checked, the same limit applied to all the lanes and more than 10 over is volunteering for a ticket from police equipped by your car insurance company with the latest in speed measuring technology.

And just how fast is “pretty fast?” Is that a highway engineering term of art?

I suspect you wouldn't have much luck arguing a ticket by pointing to the fact that you were in the 2nd lane from the right and therefore entitled to go 75 in a 65.
