[quote=Anonymous]I have driven in Germany quite a lot. One key difference the cars are much better maintained and cars are required to be in brand new condition regardless of age to pass inspection. A rust spot, scratch, torn seat anything you fail. The cars are inspected to assume they are capable of driving at high rates of speed for long hours. Also slower moving trucks are common and keep to right noses with very high speeds in left lane. In the left lane you must yield to faster cars. A Ferrari, V8 Mercedes SL, high end Porsche approaching in left lane the slower vehicle must get over. You need to watch rear view mirror a lot. I was on highway when a lane of large US military vehicles in far right driving 45-50 mph, we were in company bus going 50-55 in next lane, 190sl, VWs in next lane and far left high end cars cooking. There can be a 100mph difference between cars on same high way. I got so into it I bought a used 2 seater Mercedes V8 SL. In Germany the saying The Star guarantees right of way. Meaning high end Mercedes the Mercedes Star signaling SL the fast model cars need to pull out of left lane when one approaches. The next summer after getting my Mercedes SL I got up very early Saturday morning to go to my vacation place and driving by myself in empty highway at around 80 mph. A Lexus gets on highway and in left lane tail gates me. Damn highway empty. I know my right of way is guaranteed by birth so I don’t pull over and increase speed till I get to 120 mph. The SOB highbeamed me at 120 mph. Took a quick look road empty just around sunrise I floored it. Damn SL tranny shifted to fifth gear around 125 mph and I heard the chirp of tires. Yes tired spun at 125 mph and I pull away up to 145 mph before I “scared for life” slowed it down to 90 mph. Damm Lexus then pulls around me to right, salutes me and gives thumbs up and gets behind me. Only time went that fast. But to be honest my Mercedes SL at 120 mph was begging me to punch it up.
