8 Year Old Playing Pretend

Yes, I teach second graders and I see them do this all the time. I was also mildly surprised to see some really loud/tough, misbehaved 2nd grade boys sitting sweetly making friendship bracelets. They also still check out picture books. It's cute.

How funny - I didn’t know the cat phase was common! My DD, 8, and her buddies had a major cat theme going on the first half of the school year. They also sometimes play “family”.

I'm a grownup and I still play pretend. I just call it "writing stories."

The baby thing can be annoying, but pretend play is great. Normal and healthy, including beyond age 8. As some PPs have said, it's a creative outlet. When I was a kid -- maybe til 11-12 years old -- my friends and I recorded ourselves doing radios shows with my little tape recorder, used Barbies to act out commercials for all kinds of things, and put on puppet shows -- writing script, making puppets and cardboard theater, making and selling tickets, and being puppeteers -- for younger kids in the neighborhood.

I remember us doing this one time with my friends younger brother about that age. He didn’t seem to mind being the baby even drinking a bottle and getting a diaper.

Kids are funny.

My 8 year old niece still likes to occasionally pretend she’s a baby. Crawls around and will only do baby talk.

What I'm more worried about is having 2 kids where the younger one dragging the older one down into younger-childish play, and not vice versa for balance.

How old are they? What kind of games are they playing?

OP, it's ok to have an imagination.

She'll be fine.

I am so glad I am not alone. I had no idea that the cat thing was common. But omg when will it end??? (We were a lion first. And now a cat.)

Who cares? I was playing pretend with my little sister until halfway through 13. I knew it was childish and I enjoyed it anyway because I knew my childhood was almost over and wanted to make it last.

So what if the older one plays?

There's some standup comedian who has a story about playing with action figures until he was 12, the same year he started smoking. He'd have his wrestler toys fighting it out in the ring then he'd take a break a go outside for a cigarette.

I agree. I've always said that kids should be a kid as long as possible. Don't know about the smoking though lol. Can't imagine why you'd want to ever, let alone at 12.
