Indiana University or University of Maryland?

If she’s interested in speech pathology, her job prospects will be secure coming out of either place. Choose the better experience. Sounds like for her that’s Indiana.

Hi there. I am the OP. Your responses were all so valuable and I appreciate all of them. Has anyone had experience with Hutton Honors specifically. What are the benefits in particular? I saw they have honor floors in certain dorms but not really an honors dorm or LLC, per se.

Thank you all again. We are getting close to a decision. AAGH.

US News rates it above UMD in every one of the programs you cite (including poly sci) plus she’ll have access to Hutton Honors. Gorgeous campus, friendly students, and Bloomington is a fantastic college town. The music program is world class. She’ll love it!

Not true. Md ranks in the 40s for poly sci and Indiana comes in the 70s. If she is truly struggling with the decision after touring both schools and costs aren’t a determining factor, I’d go with MD. There are more opportunities in this area to feed the music hobby. A good friend of mine majored in Music minor English at MD and worked at Kennedy Center and now is the BP of opera programming at wolf trap.

Despite all that, this state flagship has over 80% acceptance rate.

UMD looks like better school overall and thus ranked higher at #55 vs #72 IU

Please go potty in your toilet.

Anonymous wrote:IU has incredible opportunities for music. The access to world-class performers alone would sway me. It is very pretty there and surprisingly walkable with a health food grocery store, Target, and mall all within walking distance. She would also have special opportunities and access with Hutton Honors. Hamilton-Lugar is very strong if she’s interested in IR and poli sci. Good luck to her.

Last night, I watched (via streaming) my son perform in the Jacobs Spring Showcase which had the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. (He's in the Symphonic). They are *amazing.*

There was a time when I would have said Maryland. Now, I'd pick Indiana. Both good, honestly.

Ha! This is so funny because I went to both- IU for 2.5 years then transferred to UMD college park for last 2 (came home because my mom got cancer). I would choose IU hands down, although I had a great time at both. UMD felt more like a commuter school in that it’s pretty urban comparatively and had a lot of students who lived in surrounding towns. In Bloomington, everyone lives in Bloomington, and parties in Bloomington, and it made for a much more insular experience. Academically they were pretty similar. IU is also incredibly gorgeous. Good luck, OP!

Umd feels that way also due to a lot more “grindy” students

eh.. some people wouldn't see that as a good thing.

A lot of UMD students post sophmore year live in off campus apts. That may be why you think it has a commuter feel to it. But, even if one lives off campus, one can still be engaged in the school.
