Ok we are down to the wire here and stuck.
Indiana with Hutton Honors plus scholarship of University of Maryland DD loves music and is liberal arts focused. Will likely do a minor in music and major in English/ History/Political Science/ Speech Pathology. |
| Have you visited both? I would choose Indiana if money isn’t a concern as the campus is beautiful and I’m not a big fan of College Park. However, I feel your child should decide by which one she felt more comfortable in. |
Yes. We have visited both. Campus IS beautiful. |
| With the interests she’s identified (especially the music part) I’d do Indiana. |

UMD

Isn't Indiana U Bloomington a flagship in Indiana?
It's got over 80% acceptance rate. |
| The music school at Indiana is renowned and IU a wonderful campus with friendly students. Hutton scholar awesome too! |
Yes but the music school acceptance rate is much lower. Around 25%? Very respected music school. |
|
You said music is minor.
If you end up majoring something like political science, UMD would be the winner. Proximity to DC is big for that kind of major. |
Yes, minor in music but wants access to lessons etc. |
|
So sacrifice long term career prospects for music lessons? |
|
IU!!
US News rates it above UMD in every one of the programs you cite (including poly sci) plus she’ll have access to Hutton Honors. Gorgeous campus, friendly students, and Bloomington is a fantastic college town. The music program is world class. She’ll love it! |
Despite all that, this state flagship has over 80% acceptance rate. UMD looks like better school overall and thus ranked higher at #55 vs #72 IU |
Is that due to the engineering and CS majors being so highly ranked there? |
