Whitman / Chances of Violence

Anonymous wrote:My daughter had been considering two private schools but now has decided to attend our local public, which is Whitman. The only problem is that she has anxiety attacks about school shootings. We are definitely seeking the help of a therapist, but her fears are not illogical or irrational. 2022 had the most number of school shootings ever. So two questions:

1. What are the chances of a school shooting? Statistics help.
2. What measures are in place at MCPS schools to prevent shootings?

I saw the thread already re safety and it was just a bunch of people arguing and no answer, so I’m looking for an eels answer. Thanks.

I’m sorry a Christian private in Tenn just had a shooting

Please get you and your kid therapy you did this to them
Privates aren’t safer clearly you have a screw loose

Homeschool. The schools are no longer safe.

If only the GOP would allow common-sense gun reform.

Also low odds you'll have your house blow up from a gas leak, drown at the pool, or get run over by a car walking to school. All of those are more likely than a school shooting, though, in MoCo at least.

This. Bad stuff happens. Not very often, but more than never.

This is the USA. You are in wrong forum.

Your comment is ridiculous. As tragic as they are, the chances of a mass shooting in any given school are incredibly small. Kids are way more likely to be victimized in other ways and settings. Look up the data.

Chicago and Baltimore are doing great with their gun laws...

Actually I did. Gun violence is the number one cause of harm to children in America.

I think parents and teachers need to band together and all strike (pull their kids) until something tangible is done to protect the kids and the teachers. Hit 'em in the wallet.

What exactly is the problem again?

You are correct! Everything other than meaningful gun reform is just a bandaid...

If she has anxiety attacks about that why did she decide on whitman? It's a safe school generally

Maybe she’d be better off staying with private if she’s that paranoid?

It's not a perfect school. Your child may see physical and verbal fighting and drug use. The last big incident I remember is the attack in the parking lot with a cooking pan or some other hard object but that was a while ago.

And who are the shooters? The mentally stable and the law abiding?
