If we like Hilton Head...

Long time HHI visitor with a house in Mount Pleasant. I don’t think IOP is like HHI at all, except it’s in SC.

Haha it’s a beach vacation, what kind of tricks are you looking for?

Here’s an important tip: Recognize that cars do not stop and yield to bike traffic on HHI. Remember this both when driving your car, and riding your bike.

We also have a house on HHI and feel the same way. The really frustrating thing is that you will go to a place and have an enjoyable meal (food and service), then the next time you go back to the same place, even just a week or two later, and it will be an awful experience.

I find most beach areas are like this though, so I keep my expectations low. Fortunately we are really good cooks.

I like Hilton Head because it is a good mix of plentiful restaurants/shops/etc. to walk to, but it doesn't feel overdeveloped (we have been to Siesta Key, St. Pete Beach, Destin, and Clearwater Beach in FL and those all felt far too commercial for my liking). I like that the hotels/condos are set back quite a bit from the beach. Love love love all the greenery, the dedicated walking/biking paths, etc. Anywhere else that feels low key but isn't JUST beach? Never been to Outer Banks, but worried it might feel too isolated?

We will go to HHI this summer (again) but thinking for the future...

Jekyll island + St Simons Island

Jekyll has wonderful bike paths all over the island. I like theirs much better than HHI. Their paths go along the beach, the mansions and the maritime forest. Felt safer than HHI bc the bike paths didn’t intersect with cars and the roads very much.

Check out Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
