Because that data is about Matriculation, not admissions. |
| Geographic diversity is a real thing. Every one of my Hawaii friends who applied got into top East Coast schools -- Harvard, MIT, UVA, Penn, etc. (Most of us stuck to California , though, going to UCLA, Stanford, Berkeley as top choices. ) |

Re geographic diversity: I'm from Arizona and I was surprised to see so many of my "confirmed Arizonan" friends from high school go to Yale, Penn, Georgetown (me) etc. Some went to Northwestern and U. Chicago. Like a previous poster said, many to California.
I'm in MoCo now and really shocked at the low acceptance rates from these MoCo "top" high schools. Maybe you should all stop applying to the same places. |
| I just went to Carnegie Mellon’s undergrad admissions meeting and saw the grad class of Science, Engineering and CS. All Asian but 3 kids. They said 40% of last years incoming freshman were from California and there were 1900 incoming students, the largest class ever. Maybe if other races worked as hard and had as great of a focus as them, their kids would be at these schools too. |
Still, we are in April of 2023. They should have matriculation data by now for both those years. |
| I am the poster from Arizona. My kids are only in middle school now but I will definitely be recommending excellent schools like Grinnell, Carleton, or Univ. of Washington and Arizona. Not crazy about the East Coast, despite being here nearly 20 years now. I loved being in college at Georgetown but actually living in the area as a non-student adult is exhausting. |
That's great the California kids are going to Penna for college. Now we need to get more DC/VA/MD kids to go to Oregon and Washington. |
A high % of RMIB kids end up at UMD, including my own. They all apply to the same T10 schools, and as expected, many get rejected. The choices seem to be T10 or UMD, and even the T10 is only possible with lots of merit since most of the T10 are crazy expensive. DC had only two T10 schools they really wanted - both are $80K/yr. We are a donut family so DC did not apply ED. These schools also don't offer merit aid. If they got into one of the two, we would've had to seriously think about whether the cost was worth it. Sometimes, it's not worth it, so many, including my own, go to UMD honors with merit. |
Another magnet family here. We had the same considerations and my kid will be with yours at UMD honors with merit. We could have afforded one of these T10 schools but avoided having to weigh this choice to pay hundreds of thousands extra. Kid ended up on waitlist for top choices. |
With a little extra effort they might even invent flying machine, harness the power of the atom, or even put a man on the moon! |
| Maybe the grade inflation stories are too common and they realize in mock even 4.9 students might be illiterate. Good luck filling out your student debt paperwork. Hopefully you can write your name. Lol |
