Elrich vetoes controversial planning board member

Anonymous
It looks like the votes against were corrected in the past week, and now they are voting for the selected candidate.

Mink’s words in defense of this person were telling…”I think that we all agree that aggressive action must be taken…”

There you go, we now have another “aggressive action” planning board member.

You mean, the County Council is voting to make sure that the candidate they already voted to appoint is actually appointed?

The three councilmembers who originally voted for Branson instead of Hedrick were presumably voting for Branson, not against Hedrick.

In any case, it sounds like your fundamental disagreement is with the voters of Montgomery County.

I read this on Facebook on moderately Montgomery

“With Council members Mink and Jawando indicating they will vote to reaffirm James Hedrick to the planning board it appears that County Executive Elrich’s will will be overturned.”

Then in the comments-

“Received by email:

"I wanted to inform you that the public hearing on Bill 12-23, Police - Traffic Stops – Limitations has been moved to April 25 at 7:00pm."

This is Mink & Jawando's bill. The original hearing was scheduled for June. I wonder if this is how their votes were bought?”

I really hope this is not the case.

It's weird you're assuming their votes were "bought", versus them understanding the simple facts that:

1. Hedrick is qualified
2. The County Council voted to appoint him (8 votes for Hedrick vs. 3 votes for Branson)
3. The County Council unanimously does not support ceding power over the Planning Board to the County Executive

If Elrich really stood by his veto, he wouldn't have announced it on Friday at the end of the day. That's when politicians do things they don't want anyone to notice.

I doubt Elrich ever expected his veto to stand but he still got a nice win. He gave his closest ideological allies on the council some bargaining leverage and made the YIMBYs heads explode over the weekend. And later when Hedrick inevitably says something unpopular and crass, Elrich can say I told you so.

He did not get any win. All he did was look petty.

It's also frankly bizarre to refer to Jawando, Mink, and Sayles as Elrich's "closest ideological allies on the council". Or, conversely, to characterize the 8 councilmembers who voted for Hedrick the first time, including Balcombe, Friedson, Katz, Albornoz, and Luedtke, as YIMBYs.

Katz, Balcombe, etc weren’t the ones losing their minds.

Elrich only looks petty in the eyes of people who were never going to vote for him anyway, so no loss there.

Only winning for Elrich.

(And I don’t even like him but he beats the YIMBYs like a drum and I think that’s hilarious)

Nobody was losing their minds. It was obvious on Friday afternoon that the Council would override the veto first thing on Monday.

Twitter says otherwise with the action alerts and whatnot.

A few ways to look at this.

1) The council stood up to Elrich, not only on this (relatively small issue, lets be honest), and sent a shot back to him not to interfere on routine council matters. They voted as a unianimous bloc to send a message back to him.

2) I imagine Elrich knew this would happen, but still scored some points with his hive of weird TP Yimbys who are otherwise in lockstep with the council.

3) If Jawando, Mink, and Sayles were actually able to extract anything from Glass on this- like the expedited hearing on their road stops bill, thats really something. I doubt it, though that is just my personal opinion.
