It's weird you're assuming their votes were "bought", versus them understanding the simple facts that:

1. Hedrick is qualified
2. The County Council voted to appoint him (8 votes for Hedrick vs. 3 votes for Branson)
3. The County Council unanimously does not support ceding power over the Planning Board to the County Executive

If Elrich really stood by his veto, he wouldn't have announced it on Friday at the end of the day. That's when politicians do things they don't want anyone to notice.

I doubt Elrich ever expected his veto to stand but he still got a nice win. He gave his closest ideological allies on the council some bargaining leverage and made the YIMBYs heads explode over the weekend. And later when Hedrick inevitably says something unpopular and crass, Elrich can say I told you so. [/quote]
