Should Germans be proud of Hitler and the Nazis because they are part of history? Should they leave monuments to them and continue to name mascots and perpetuate traditions in their image?

You totally made my point. You just compared early American history to the Third Reich.

Yes, near-genocide of native peoples, and millions dead and disenfranchised through slavery, and still in poverty and an unfair social system. Yes, dear. Yes.

So you think the United States is as illegitimate as the third Reich? Again, you are repulsive

Well if you look at US atrocities, they include:

Genocide of native peoples
Slavery
Use of concentration camps against a minority population
Only nation to use nuclear weapons against civilian populations. Twice.
Spread of capitalism

Actually, examined through that lens, the USA is worse.

There was a brief period of time in world history when we were the good guys. Otherwise, we’re pretty phucking evil.

If the United States had been a completely empty land, you might have a point. What you are conveniently forgetting is that this land was already inhabited. So the “colonials” who came here turned into colonizers who murdered, robbed and disgracefully betrayed native peoples. Then, they brought enslaved people to this land and colonized some more on the backs of those enslaved peoples.

-2005 GW alumna who would take any mascot or name and appreciates the change

So what is the difference between the establishment of colonies and the subsequent establishment of an independent country - both political structures were tainted by the exploitation you reference ?

Um, YEAH. You can’t use money and resources gained by blood to build a political structure free of exploitation. You can work to improve it, and must do, whenever and however you can.

Let’s just be honest. The point is to piss on American history and America itself.

Is the point of the Catholic practice of reconciliation to “piss on” God’s servant? Or is it for God’s servant to confess his or her sins, and receive forgiveness, and go forward stronger? Is the point of the 12-step AA program to “piss on” someone who is admitting he or she is an alcoholic and needs to make amends and make changes, or is it to strengthen that person to lead a healthier, happier life? Are Jews who observe Yom Kippur “pissing on” themselves when they reflect, repent and be forgiven?

How about “let’s just be honest” by…being honest. Being honest about the past, and being honest about what we can and should do for a better future. I love our country and can face the truth of all that was wrong with it and is wrong with it now. Can you? How else can you create a stronger, healthier future full of more possibilities than to reflect, repent and DO BETTER?

Well stated. Whole heartedly agree with the above.

So we ended world war 2 and spread capitalism, which has lifted billions out of poverty and into an era of unimaginable technological sophistication? This makes us worse than Hitler?

You are even more repulsive than I realized. It’s frightening that people like you live amongst us. And people like you are the reason our country is descending (which is the outcome you must favor).

Yes, collectively our country is worst than Hitler — we certainly murdered millions more people. Thankfully there are countries out there that value freedom and inclusion.

We lead the world in only a few categories: billionaires, military spending, incarcerations and the percentage of people who believe angels are real.

We suck. We are a shithole country.
