Feedback on Norwood School?

Another nice thing about Norwood is that they have a strong sibling policy. That means that there is academic diversity at the school because they feel an obligation to siblings.

Thanks, but I want to make sure I'm fully understanding your answer. Are you saying that they will decline to accept for kindergarten a child who has turned 6 on, say, May 15? And that they don't discourage, for a fall admission to K, children who turn 5 in June, July, and August? (That's the discouragement you get from Primary Day and others, even though the "official" date is September 1.) Thanks.

My sense is that GDS and Green Acres consider same-sex couples "diverse" and seek that out in the same way that they seek out other diversity. That will naturally result in a larger number of same-sex families at the school.

You are correct. They will accept applications as long as the child is 5 by September 1. That red shirting at primary day is to me a red flag.

Did you attend the new parent coffee today? What did you think?

I think the facilities and art/music programs are amazing. I was also impressed by the number of non-white children among those who gave the musical performances (which were great). But it seemed to me that there were not nearly as many non-white faces among the parents in the room.

PP, Yes I went to the Open House and was also struck by how homogeneous and white the parents were (but that the music group that played was more diverse). Are you weighing other options?

No, this is our only option at this point, and I do think it is on balance a wonderful school. I was just curious if I was alone in having that particular impression.

I missed the meeting this morning. Were there any African American, Asian or Hispanic parents?

I was at the coffee this morning and yes, there were diverse families. I also went to some classrooms and was impressed by the diversity of the student body.

did anyone know typical ratio of applicant number to the admission offers for Norwood? we are interested in applying for next year...thanks.
