IU is worth it. 100%

Miami is amazing too they have a set amount given for OOS. Did she not qualify for that? They are very different schools. One is giant and with amazing sports. The other is much smaller state school in a very small town with not so great sports.

I don't know. I mean I would have my kid do either over JMU unless the JMU price is really really good.

You seem to have more than passing knowledge of all three schools. How are career outcomes at IA vs. Miami vs JUM?

FWIW, I loved IU, Bloomington, and even though I only spent 3 years there have strong ties to it.

+100. So nice to read that you liked Bloomington and IU. I have two degrees from IUB. I am originally from Indiana but moved here to the DMV years ago. My IU degrees have served me well in the DC area. Bloomington/IU is a special place. Warms my heart when people on DCUM praise it rather than tearing it apart...

Off topic, but how about their women's basketball team!!! We went to Bloomington this weekend and watched them beat the hell out of the Purdue team to clinch the Big 10 regular season title. Sold out Assembly Hall!

+10000. I know! So wonderful that you actually went to the game. I can only imagine the energy in Assembly Hall. Good times!

My son plays in the pep band. It’s fantastic.

Oh how wonderful! He must have the best time. I envy the fun the pep band and Marching 100 seemed to have. Also, they made life long friends in those two groups!

Yes, he would have been fine anyway, but the instant friend group really sped along his adapting to college life. Probably the only down side is that, because he was spending so much time at band practice the first week or two on campus, he never got to know the other kids on his dorm floor all that well.

DP. I don't know anything about JMU, but I know business school grads from both Miami and IU. I'd say the outcomes are fairly similar in terms of what I can tell about their income and lifestyles except that the Miami grads I know are pretty localized to the Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland areas whereas the IU grads are all over the place. But this is just anecdotal - the Miami business students I met when I was there pretty much all came from in-state whereas (when I was in law school) the IU business students I met were more likely to be from out of state in the first place. Also, I was at those places 30 years ago.

IU is very well respected nationally. I think we’ll worth the price difference. And beautiful campus to boot.

Totally anecdotal but I work with IU and Miami grads in DC. I don't work with JMU grads but I do know people who have their kids there now. I would think that all of them being state schools have similar career outcomes though Kelly grads are in a completely different category.

NP - PP could you expand on this comment please? Our DS with no hook is in FFX Public HS on track for 4.2 WGPA and SAT ~1350 and just OK ECs. So JMU would be a good target but otherwise in state VT and W&M not likely admits. Interested in Business so IUB Kelley is on the radar. He also is keen on NC State and UF but again tough admits for him. I'm from the Mid-West so love the idea of IUB but not sure how it fairs compared to any other large state school. Thanks

Is your DS a music student at Jacobs as well? How fun!

Yup - pursuing a dual degree in composition through Jacobs and computer science through Luddy. He seems to be having a great freshman year, and we're awfully proud of him.

DP. With those grades, your DS def. has a shot at VT Pamplin or W&M.

Seem like dicey majors

Yes, if they apply ED.

PP. We are thinking VT could be an option with ED but as others are finding out it's not a sure thing. Hate to use up the ED card for a 50/50 shot.

DP. ED is a 50/50 shot anywhere. It's not a guarantee, it just might help.

I would never choose JMU over IU. That's ridiculous.
