metro fare evasion is absolutely ridiculous

So sick of the normalization of this law breaking behavior and stealing. American society has degraded into anarchy and people do whatever they want with animalistic instincts. If we cannot live up to a very simple social contract of something like not stealing and paying for your rides, then what has this society and region become? I'll tell you what it is - gutter trash culture with no respect for any kind of civilization. The fact that we are forced to swallow this lawlessness with a smile is patently absurd.

Why does anyone pay for the metro if tons of lawbreakers are allowed to get away with stealing? At a minimum, why doesn't the metro install gates like NYC that require turnstiles to go through that are much harder to evade fate?

DMV needs to get a damn culture and should stop condoning crime.

You’re ridiculous, OP. You see one group of people doing something minor and all of America is in anarchy? Good Lord, do you catastrophize much in other areas of your life? You need psychiatric help for your disordered thinking.

I’ve seen this too…first time was shocking it’s so common know I wondered if I missed a WMATA announcement. I don’t lose much thought over it, I just tap my card and keep it moving.

I always smirk when I see some of these fare jumpers. You're wearing $200 shoes and a $100 jacket (okay you might have stolen them) but you can't afford $2-3 for a ticket?

Seriously. Animalistic? Primal needs? Ratchet the rhetoric down about 10 levels, dude.

Yes, they sit on the platform and smoke weed. The station manager refuses to say anything because he says it happens all the time. Metro has gone downhill. It’s very sad.

That would be unfair to those who obviously can't afford to pay.

I hope you are being sarcastic. It’s hard to tell.

If you can’t afford something, you don’t do it. You find another way.

Or the city could start a program to give out free card to people who need them if that is desired.

City already has these programs. People still don't pay.

Yeah, it's not a matter of not being able to afford the fare. It's about a general sense of entitlement and feeling like people owe you for some reason. It's the same reason people blast speakers and smoke on the metro - entitlement.

I hate seeing people jump the turnstiles. It does not set a good example for my kids, who do ride free but with Metro cards.

I wish they would enforce payment.

Agree with the first poster. Little things add up.

"In criminology, the broken windows theory states that visible signs of crime, anti-social behavior and civil disorder create an urban environment that encourages further crime and disorder, including serious crimes. The theory suggests that policing methods that target minor crimes such as vandalism, loitering, public drinking, jaywalking, and fare evasion help to create an atmosphere of order and lawfulness."

That's a really old theory that's been debunked.

No it hasn’t. What happened is that it led to a lot of lazy policing that was unconstitutional, eg “stop and frisk”. The research is pretty clear that consistent and vigorous enforcement with immediate penalties works.

Add in daily mass shootings, fentanyl ODs, people dying from lack of insulin, stores closing because of theft with no repercussions.....the list goes on and on. Yeah, America is in precipitous freefall and filled with moral and societal rot where everything is devolving into anarchy. A valid, cesspool filled culture where animalistic urges rule society.

No one needs to pay for the metro. Fares aren't enforced, so why should you pay when the culture of this region is to condone stealing?

It’s not really the responsibility of random people on the Metro making their own bad choices to set an example for your kids. Do you pay your fare? That’s the example your kids are taking.

Metro is funded by our tax dollars and should be free.
