SUNY schools — why aren’t they as popular as other OOS schools

But overall the SUNY schools don't have very attractive campuses and are in cold locations in towns that aren't exactly thriving. Who'd want to live there if many of the kids at those schools are going home on the weekends? You could have a similar experience at UMBC or George Mason and the weather would be better.

Most are unattractive campuses and located in the middle of nowhere with bad weather. There are many "better options" that are also affordable.

I have heard that SUNY Stony Brook is much better for graduate school. Much smaller classes and connection with professors. On the undergrad level, huge classes taught by TAs.

Because they're in Stonybrook, Binghamton, Geneseo, Buffalo, and Oswego. Have you spent Sept-May in these places? They have three seasons: June, July, August, and winter.

Yes with the exception of Stony Brook, which is on Long Island, close to Long Island Sound Beaches in the town of Stony Brook, and a short drive to ocean beaches at Fire Island State Park. And the weather on Long Island is actually wonderful. 4 seasons (and winter is milder than ever).

Yes, I should have left that one off. I just copy/pasted and missed that one.

No worries - I am from LI and didn't want to go upstate bc of the weather and the towns. But the education is great at the SUNY schools. Just a weird system in that there is no traditional football powerhouse style flagship. Many used to route for Syracuse as a orivate stand in. The SUNY system just evolved differently.

Haha, yeah. I'm also the same person who posted about the SECs being more popular partially for the football culture. I agree that the SUNY system is good, but it really serves NYers (as it should) better than people from farther away as the schools are kinda hard to reach. Well, that and the 4 season thing.

I UCLA.

Just as relevant as your comment.

I'm a SUNY Binghamton Grad (class of 94) and tried to convince my daughter to apply there but she had no interest, for the reasons PPs have stated: crappy weather, not the nicest campus. I had a great experience there but it's a hard sell when there are other state schools that cost the same and are more attractive.

DD looked at SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry. It's definitely a unique option among state Us. Ultimately, the more urban location was a turn off (she ended up at a very rural LAC)

This. And another negative is that as a consequence of those things, the student body is overwhelmingly NY state residents. That's true of most public schools of course, but there is a big difference between a place like Pitt, that is about 35% out of state, vs a place like SUNY Binghamton, where 95% of students are from NY. And that percentage is even lower at other SUNY schools. No geographic diversity at all.

Anyone been to Fredonia recently? It's on the list.

Seems incredibly short-sighted of NY state not to have a more appealing university system. Insane.

Why do people care about location so much? That’s such an adult way to look at it. Teens care about drinking and parties. They don’t care about going into town as much.

SUNY schools, in general, are incredible undergraduate values for NYS residents. Especially Bing, Stony Brook (STEM) and Geneseo.

They definitely appeal to those looking for more steak than sizzle.

Who's to say it's not appealing to NY state residents? Doesn't need to be judged based on whether kids in Bethesda want to go there.

They certainly do have one. It’s designed so that students can commute easily as well.
