SUNY schools — why aren’t they as popular as other OOS schools

And loudness.

Which SUNY school would you recommend for pre-med students?

Or is it possible NYS focused on the important things and not the pretty campuses?

I do agree that campuses are not attractive. But who cares? They are state schools. These schools give solid educations to a lot of students at a very reasonable cost.

Come on, just because a building is inexpensive, it doesn’t mean it has to be ugly.

It’s more like the people designing the campuses were afraid of choosing any architectural style that might be considered traditional.

They thought they were picking styles that were cool, new, & edgy, & campuses have ended up looking like Moscow apartment complexes.

Right. It’s just like when you pick a spouse—WHO CARES WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE? As long as they are cheap & solid, that’s enough!

SUNY Albany grad. I’m thankful for the free ride through school! Love the SUNY system. Set me up well for graduate school.

Lots of brutalist architecture that was popular in the era these campuses were built.

And you can walk right off campus into a town with cafes and restaurants catering to the college crowd.

And ten steps later you are out in the fields with the corn and the cows.

These days it has to be Stony Brook.

Embrace winter.

+ 1. I don’t think I could study a lot when it’s beautiful out for so many months. . I’d probably have a low GPA if I was in a warm climate college!

That’s ok though, I respect what they are doing for their own residents. Their purpose is not to serve OOS families, nor is it that how they make budget.

Pros to SUNYs - might be a great opportunity to play a D3 sport (look at Geneseo’s Ice Hockey, soccer, equestrian, and lax). Great niche programs. Great teachers colleges. And they are cheap!

Maybe the SUNYs just don't need to market to OOS? NYS is known to resource its education system, NY has a large population, and the schools are heavily utilized by NYS students.

+ 1. My doctor’s kid goes to Buffalo, and my dentist’s kid goes to Binghamton. They said they seem to be doing very well with their experience and internships, and at low costs there will be money left for grad school if needed.

Binghamton grad here. I didn't care it was ugly, I got into the best state school and received a great education and had a wonderful experience. But it is ugly.

Binghamton is a great school. Albany too. Buffalo is a large school in a city. Oswego is one of the most depressing places in the country.

Binghamton is it amazing school, great reputation, solid choice no matter what.

But Stonybrook is an absolute powerhouse for the life sciences. That would be the ideal choice.
