DS is upset with us for providing too much.

The landlord wants to ensure your kid has a history of paying his bills. Oh right, he has no bills. Sorry, the electric bill doesn’t count. Just co-sign on this first rental.

Not a big deal Op. Your story's interesting, Op. That's all. You do more harm overthinking this and putting-up with any attitude from your son if he's being ungrateful.

He’s lying. I had this exact issue when I went to lease a car for the first time. It just took an extra phone call and iirc a tax return.

Meh, so he doesn't get the best rate for a first time car loan, so what? There has to be a first time for it... DH and I bought our first car in cash and had a mortgage when we needed to buy a second car and we didn't get the best rate because we had never had a car loan before. We also had excellent credit scores. So it sucks but he'll get a better rate next time, assuming he pays it on time.

To add: Can he also put down more than his current plan? That may also lower the rate and even if it doesn't, he'll pay less overall, as it will be over a shorter period. (But will help his history for next time.)

he's 30 and doesn't have 32 K to buy a car when he has had all these years of no bills? WTH

You coddled him too much - you know it; I know it, even the dog knows it. He's whiny, and you are whiny. Cut the cord, and move on...

1. What? Captive finance arms almost always have the best rates
2. I would never trust a bank or CU to advise me either - both are trying to sell you their products

You get a great credit score by having credit history.

Agree, the OP makes no sense. Some troll hypothetical from someone who doesn’t know how credit scores are created.

His therapist told him that his situation is a failure to launch situation because he's been too reliant on us, his parents, for the "large adult things."

That's why he's very focused on buying a car on his own.

Therapy for what?

My 25 year old daughter, who has a 740 credit score, was able to lease a $27k car with a 2% apr. She only has 2 credit cards. With your sons credit score of 800 he should have been able to get a much better rate than 9%.

NP
I need someone like you in my life from time to time

The dealer is trying to take advantage of him. Just tell him to go somewhere else for a loan. I guarantee the dealer will magically drop their rates.

He should put your maiden name down as the landlord and when they call you for a reference you don’t have to mention he is your son. Just say he was a good tenant who never had any over due bills.
