Why are people impressed by people who can play guitar? What's the allure?

Unless they play another instrument and can read music, I do not care about acoustic guitars nor their owners.

This is OP. My son can play piano in addition to guitar. He can read and write music quite well. He is not someone who only knows how to play a few chords.

I told him that I will not pay beyond four years if he takes longer to graduate; however, I am getting resistance from DW.

He will have plenty of time to work later. He doesn't even need to a degree to get a job in this field. Let him enjoy this experience-he's unlikely to have it again.
For me a guitar in an already attractive man's hands is like adding a halo. In my personal experience, though a bit rough, those fingers can do things.

My son plays guitar, can read and write music, and is doing well in CS.

Op is your son losing interest in CS?

Yeah, I feel like the guitar playing has nothing to do with OP's main issue...

There’s nothing worse than one of my fellow boomers breaking out their guitar and butchering classic rock tunes while the rest of us have to sit there all uncomfortable. I loathe it.

This isn't 1995. Nobody listens to or cares about rock music anymore.

Apparently you must be clueless with music. Ever seen Beiber or Harry Styles and the groupies that follow them?
