What happens if you don't do service hours in middle school?

They don’t let parents know. Ask your kids about them, they talk about service hours in civics classes to your kid. It’s not a requirement if you think of it as something “mandatory.” If you thought of things like that then heck, nothing at school would be mandatory. Service hours are a grade at our school, but no one can force you to do them, just like every assignment done in school. Think of it as an assignment, that’s what we do. Also, NJHS is for 8th graders, and this whole service thing is done for 8th graders at the school my child goes to.

My daughter is in 8th and honors Civics. Service hours count as a formative grade. She has done hours but they haven't been approved by X2Vol yet so she still shows a zero for that grade. However, it doesn't affect her total grade much if at all and she still has a high A so she's not worried about completing the hours anymore.

Jr National Honor Society has their own requirements.
