The real question is about the OP, who, if a real poster, is apparently willing to spend $34,000 to hold a spot at an extra school because she and her son haven't been able to make a decision between 2 schools since the decisions were mailed on March 8th. Even if you've got plenty of money that seems like a waste. And it is also unfair to the family that might be on the waitlist at one of those schools (which yes, happens to be my family)

No, OP hasn't spent an extra $34,000 yet to hold a spot at a second school. She's probably paid two deposits of $1000 each. STA's tuition is due until July 3, and perhaps Siwell's is due around that time, too.

I meant that STA's tuition is NOT due until July 3.

Right, because MD high schools and VA middle schools play in the fall, and VA high schools and MD middle schools play in the spring. In the private schools all teams play in the fall, at both levels (and the girls play winter soccer as well).

But I believe the binding date on the contracts are June 1? So even if she hasn't paid tuition she is on the hook for it.

You know what? You're right. I did sign a binding contract for the whole amount on June 1. That means OP must be a troll looking to start an STA-Sidwell fight, or a person with money to throw away?

Charitably, someone thinking about next year . . . But most likely a phony post.

Some people DO have money to throw away...disgusting but it's true.

I don't think it is disgusting. Perhaps they consider it a charitable contribution. The school gets the extra money for no services provided (and they can always fill the space). I don't have that kind of money, but if someone does and wants to spread an extra $34K to one of my kids' schools, more power to them.

I don't have any problem with someone's spending $35,000 just to hold a spot at a school and then not taking the spot. But let's be cklear that the $35,000 would not be a charitable contribution that is tax-deductible under the federal tax code, regardless of the charity one may feel. I recall am thread earlier this spring in this forum, where a parent claimed that her deposit to hold a spot would be converted to a tax-deductible contribution in the event that her child did not matriculate. Uh, no, the money is not a contribution, for it was payment for a service or a good, i.e. that of holding the spot for her child. American taxpayers should not have to pay, through lost taxes, for her child to have a spot held at a private school.

We like both, and if it weren't for the continued increase in snob value and higher tilt towards politically connected and wealthy families at Sidwell, would have chosen that. Instead, we chose StA. But will continue to second guess our choice...

What, so Sidwell is catching up to STA in snob value?

Please.

Posted by a Sidwell booster, no doubt. Pure fiction. STA has a lock on the politically connected and wealthy. That lovely Sidwell family residing at 1600 Penn. hasn't changed that.

Posted by a GDS booster, no doubt. A clever ruse to raise suspicions about the kinds of parents populating these schools.
