You are an idiot and so are the people saying that. The VT degree is a poli sci degree emphasizing national security and has a foreign language requirement. It is not a "quick hit technical degree", whatever the hell that is supposed to mean.

Yes, anyone who disagrees with you is, of course, a bona fide "idiot." How DARE they voice a different opinion!

They are idiots not because they disagreed with me but because they expressed an idiotic opinion that showed they had not even bothered to read the requirements for the degree program, and then they threw that “quick hit technical degree” nonsense in there to cap it off.

I guess it's par for the course for people on DCUM to use terms like "idiot" and "idiotic opinion" -- so much nastiness on this board. You could have chosen to point out in a civil tone that the degree requirements for the major show that it's not a "quit hit technical degree" but that wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying as personally denigrating the other person, would it? And there's nothing "idiotic" about opining that a grad degree from SAIS is of preeminent value in the intelligence community.

It is to someone involved in the intelligence community.

There's nothing idiotic about OPINING about the value of a SAIS degree when quite a few senior individuals in the IC have studied at SAIS. That doesn't mean the opinion is 100% valid or accepted by everyone - you obviously don't, and that's fine.

You're such an idiot you don't even understand that "I have heard is that it is a degree chasing a "hot trend"" and "The VT is a quick hit technical degree" are the opinions that are idiotic. I said nothing against SAIS. How do you work at a think tank with such poor reading comprehension skills?

^^Clearly someone who has no idea what this major entails. NSFA is not a "technical" degree, and most pair it with a relevant major, often an in-demand language (Russian, Arabic, etc.). If you want to talk trendy majors, look no further than CS.

I'm sensing some of the usual trolls, who can't stand it if their major or college of choice isn't being discussed.

+1 Stay away from exotic-sounding or creative-sounding majors in undergrad.

National Security and Foreign Affairs is "exotic or creative-sounding" to you? Kind of sounds like you might not get out much...

I’ve always thought of Tech as a great school for engineering, CS, and a few other things. I would not have thought of it for a major that seems like an offshoot of political science or into relations.

I also wouldn’t have thought this would be a great major for employability after graduation (I say that as a former intl relations major) unless you are joining the military or maybe foreign service .

I’m asking because I could see my DS having some interest in this major but I’d like to know more about it before mentioning it to him.

Not what you asked, OP, but if your DS is into computers and coding, the Cybersecurity major at GMU is very hot now.

This has nothing at all to do with OP's question, which was very specifically about a certain major at VT.

What about “not what you asked,OP” do you not understand? Also, OP is clearly looking for majors to suggest to her child. She hasn’t even mentioned this one yet to her DS

Did you even read the OP? Good grief.

So is the degree that is the subject of this thread.

Bizarre deflection on the part of the PP.

I have to laugh at the dope sniffing at this major and calling it a "quick hit" - whatever that means.

"The national security and foreign affairs major focuses on international interactions and offers a comparative perspective on the contemporary global system with an emphasis on foreign language proficiency. Select from nine languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish, to fulfill this requirement.

The major analyzes the role of diplomacy in the management of world affairs and examines U.S. strategy and foreign policy. You will critically think about the current and future global geopolitical environment, the use of military force, the informational issues that contribute to the implementation of strategy, and counterterrorism and homeland security. We connect theory to practice and provide you with a hands-on, practical approach to analyze threats that challenge security both at home and abroad.

Study at one of only a few universities offering the major with renowned faculty who specialize in national security. We offer broad training in the liberal arts, emphasizing the study of foreign languages. Opportunities to pursue undergraduate research, conduct field studies, and participate in study abroad are available. Many of our students also engage in the Department of State’s Diplomacy Lab Program and Wonk Tank competition."

Anonymous wrote:Wow. That is a cool major. I wish they had that when I was at Tech. I have just a “regular” political science degree but would have absolutely loved that specialization (I work at State, non-FSO).

The VT alumni network is strong in this area so I would have no qualms about marketability.

I majored in Int'l Affairs at another university, but would have loved this.

DP. You’re the one who is inexplicably determined to bring up other schools on a thread that is specifically about VT and its NSFA major. Go away if you can’t stay on topic.

You are confusing prior posters/mixing them together. I wasn't the one who first mentioned SAIS or claimed to work in the IC.
