Silver Spring schools are often regarded as pretty good for those who can't quite afford the areas in the west or really want the biggest house in a neighborhood where they might only get entry level in a more desirable area.

You can still do silver spring but be prepared to stress about the proper program or class tract, consortium lotteries, magnets and the like. Silver Spring parents call it enrichment, but it is the oldest trick in the book for ensuring you are not the same peer group or classes with your poorest neighbors while still maintaining plausible deniability to your motives.

"west of Silver Spring" Why don't you just say Bethesda Chevy Chase?

Kensington is nicer too

Rockville and Poolesville have better options

Depends on what you're looking for. Suburban or exurban hellscape? Sure.

DTSS is not appreciably different than Rockville and parts of silver spring are just as exurban. A red lobster doesn’t make silver spring an oasis

Distance from the city is the big difference.

Happy Sligo Creek French Immersion parent here, but I know a lot of parents also happy with the neighborhood school. We lived in the Rock Creek Forest area last year and people seemed happy there, both with Spanish immersion and with the school in general. Live close to Highland View now and our neighbors are happy with their kids there now (and the kids have been super welcoming to ours, even though they don’t all go to the same schools). This was also true in Rock Creek Forest where everyone was so welcoming.

Silver Spring is actually a great place to live and the schools mentioned here are very good and in some ways better than schools in the West. We had a choice to move West and we chose to stay in SS. I know the schools are good and in many ways better because I am a teacher and have taught in both areas. There are always a bunch of haters on here (prob. the people who bought above their budget). So thrilled that I can enjoy my relaxing life and retire early since I did not over expend myself. Oh and my kids - well rounded and in top universities.

That was my experience too. I think if you're an involved parent especially and prioritize your children's education you really can't go wrong here.

Wait really? I totally missed this, and I thought I’d been following pretty closely. Off to the google machine.

ESS is falling apart. Teachers are leaving in droves due to poor management.

Yes, the trial of the lotteries used for MS magnets and CES ends this year. Not sure when they'll announce what's next.

It’s actually sad because it’s a wonderful school. They haven’t had good admin in years and teachers continue to move on to better opportunities. You can see it from the outside…they don’t know how to effectively manage a school and yet try to micromanage the teachers in every aspect. Basically no one in charge knows how to run a school.

It’d help if staff members weren’t terrified of the staff development teacher or the AP. I subbed there for a few days and I would never accept a long term position there.

Most of our neighbors moved or went private because of our silver spring elementary school. Definitely do your research.

Another family that chose Silver Spring. Choice was not driven by finances but by the desire to live in a more diverse and welcoming area.
