Silver Spring ES? MS?

Pbes?

There are elementary magnet programs for 4th and 5th grades, and then another set of magnet programs for middle school. In recent years, admission to the magnets has been by lottery. Every kid who scores over a certain threshold on a specific standardized test is entered into the lottery. Some people think this is good, and some think it is bad, but the point is that it will absolutely impact GS scores. Up until now, many schools saw their best test takers leave after 3rd grade, but the GS rankings are based on tests only administered in 3rd - 5th. As more schools hang onto good test takers, you are going to see the scores sort of level out a little.

Admission to the ES and MS magnets has been a partial lottery of the top 15% from each local school. It isn't a complete lottery and that was because the test they used for admission couldn't be administered online during the pandemic. Nevertheless, the partial trial of the lottery ends this spring and they will announce an updated process based on their findings.

Oakland Terrace (whole school dual language Spanish immersion)
Flora Singer
Forest Knolls
Highland View
Woodlin
Sligo Creek
Glen Haven

Might as well add Rock View to this list.

Came here to say this - we love Rock View and the alums I know at Newport Mill MS also like it.

I have had kids at East Silver Spring, Sligo Creek, and Oak View (in the magnet program). I would say all are very good, and my kids have had great teachers at each. However, as far as admin/leadership team, I would say Oak View is strongest, followed by ESS, and SCES at a distant third. I've been very disappointed with the communication/effectiveness of the principal there.

Are you talking about the current principal at SCES? She’s way better than the last guy.

If you can afford better than Silver Spring, MoCo has better regarded schools aligned with their respective High Schools west of Silver Spring. Silver Spring schools are often regarded as pretty good for those who can't quite afford the areas in the west or really want the biggest house in a neighborhood where they might only get entry level in a more desirable area.

You can still do silver spring but be prepared to stress about the proper program or class tract, consortium lotteries, magnets and the like. Silver Spring parents call it enrichment, but it is the oldest trick in the book for ensuring you are not the same peer group or classes with your poorest neighbors while still maintaining plausible deniability to your motives.

Good lord. I'm sure the OP would not want to be your neighbor.

I live near Silver Spring. Both my kids were in magnets and gifted programs throughout MCPS starting in 1st. Yes, there was an ES magnet back then. They went through what's now the CES program. They later attended TPMS and Blair STEM magnets. This is the best possible education MCPS has to offer far better than any W. Furrter, buying in a wealthy area rampant with spoiled rich kids, hate crime, and drug use was a nonstarter for us.

Depends on what you're looking for. Suburban or exurban hellscape? Sure.

OP, sorry to see that your thread got dumped on by some folks from west of Rock Creek.

Silver Spring is a great place to live and has great school options.

I met a family that stretched really hard to live in Bethesda…then their kid went to Eastern and Blair! My kids can go to those schools and my mortgage is a fraction of the price.
