How to improve MAP-R scores

I have a parent account with common lit but created a class for my kid with it where I can create assignments. I get reports on when they are completed and how she did.

My DS improved by 30 points between fall 2022 (225) and winter 2023 (255). Prior to that, he progressed very slowly, so this is a shock to me.

Previously, many people here suggested to read A LOT, and I am sure that works for many kids, but it didn't help my DS much at all with improving his score. It was VERY VERY frustrating.

He started to take well-structured group reading classes online with many PowerPoint slides, etc., and I think that helped because he now knows how to interpret all the things he is reading.

Hi, I'm very intrigued by your story. Do you mind sharing the online class info? My kid's MAP-R scores are stagnant, 233-235 since 2022 spring to 2023 winter. She reads a lot, but it didn't help her with MAP either. TIA

Op, I would not worry too much about one data point..what matters is general trend. Maybe she had an "off" day (tired, hungry, etc). We have a few outliers with our kids too and it generally corresponds with something like that.

I'd say that's fine, too, if MCPS didn't rely on the score for a specific period for inclusion in magnet lotteries (CES & criteria-based magnet MS) and the opportunity to participate in related local programming. But they do...

Yes, that’s why I didn’t seek for something to help her right after 2022 fall test, thinking she might have a bad day or perhaps summer learning loss. But the 2023winter test is the third time in this 233-235 score range.. not easy to ignore it this time.

83rd percentile is not a low score. More likely the change was either the kid having a bad day or being under too much pressure to be at the top.

How do I help her? She is getting straight As in class. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Get her books to read.

Kids with high MAP-M and lower MAP-R, how are they socially? Are they good conversationalists; do they understand nuance and social dynamics like "mean girls" ?

Kids more on the "Aspergery" side tend to be better at literal literacy, decoding/phonics and informational texts, than reading for sub-surface interpretation, and MAP-R performance drops over time as other kids learn decoding.

It's really hard to teach that. The reason some kids effortlessly learn advanced math is same reason other kids effortlessly learn advanced reading. It's a different part of IQ.

That's not a poor score.

Those look like good scores to me.
Is there a bar for some special program at school or why the need for 95%++?

And she needs to read more complex text than whatever she is reading now. That includes non-fiction. When I tutored, I had the kids read newspaper and magazine articles.

Agree

Can the graphic novels

Can you elaborate further please?

DP

https://www.commonlit.org/en

You can get free reading reading passages and comprehension questions.

Is there a way to get answer key to comprehension questions as a parent/guardian?

You can sign up as a teacher and create assignments for your child. Then you get reports on what they get right/wrong.

How do you do that without school email?

I just did it with email. I created a class of one - my kid

I tried creating an account…as a parent..,but the site keeps stating that one must be an educator to sign up? Can you elaborate further?
