Try to contain your emotions. This opinion piece is a fairly obvious jab at DeSantis's pretty sophisticated political ploy. DeSantis wants Trump's voters without courting Trump. In order to do that, he has to build his own credibility with those voters, many of whom believe crazy conspiracy theories about the covid vaccines. In this world, all is black and white. Gray areas need not apply. I listen to true vaccine experts like Paul Offitt who said over and over and over again that boosters were not helpful to most people. He thought there was no point in Biden pushing boosters when half of Americans had not received the initial vaccine. I also listen to mental health professionals who say we should never have locked down the schools. Children are at very low risk from covid, and at very high risk of mental health problems due to the lockdown. Those children will never get those two years back when they were locked away at home away from peers and many important learning experiences. DeSantis is a smart guy. Please do not call him dumb. Please do not underestimate him. He is very dangerous. This covid grand jury is just a showy way to attract Trumpies. It will come to nothing. Don't waste your brain cells thinking about or reacting to it. Find ways to support Democrats who will preserve our democracy. DeSantis must be stopped. He cannot win the next presidential election. Keep your focus there. |
Children weren’t locked down at home. They played and socialized with peers outside of the school environment. And it wasn’t just a matter of children. It’s as if teachers and the well-being of their families are irrelevant to the balance of competing considerations. As for boosters, Offitt is a principled purist who must admit that boosters provide substantial protection from severe disease and death for elderly, obese and immunocompromised populations and there being no good rationale for not receiving a booster. If anything, the messaging for get a booster (because it provides a short term benefit of protecting against mild to moderate disease) is simpler than targeting subpopulations at higher risking severe disease/death. The same holds true for the bivalent booster which is criticized because it may not be a perfect match. Well, that’s frequently the case for the seasonal flu vaccine and yet medical professionals don’t take a wait-and-see approach for those vaccinations. But let’s not feed into the lies that the vaccine is worse than the disease or that kids don’t get seriously ill or suffer long term health complications from COVID. |

But more to the point - it's almost 2023. Who in the world wants to keep litigating what happened in 2020?!
What can you do NOW to make our lives better? Besides, of course, locking up black voters, banning books, and pointlessly antagonizing gay people. |

The party of grievance needs villains. Gotta feed Fox News a compelling narrative. Hannity is still prattling on about Seth Rich and Hillary. |
Not the pp, but I am betting there is information about the side effects (myocarditis and others) associated with the vaccines. |
Person at my school's PTA meeting was complaining about kids playing outside without masks. One person came out and yelled at kids for not maintaining social distancing. |
WHY WHY WHY do we keep pandering to conspiracy theories and idiocy? Why is DeSantis so worried about pandering to them? Why can't he, and other candidates decide to make a pact to ignore the lunacy so that we can rip ourselves away from it, once and for all, and leave it behind where it belongs? |
But it's not smart. Vaccine denial is actually increasing the number of people ending up with serious illness, longterm disability and death. In contrast the vaccines are saving lives and keeping people healthy and productive with vastly far less risk than covid itself. |
This My child's private school sent emails saying no playdates etc. It was really happening, and a lot of people were listening. |
Exactly this. I wonder how many know that FL is also trying really hard to backpedal on taking away Disney's Reedy Creek? It's all for show, they'll get their cheering from their crowd and try to quietly undue their stupidity behind the scenes. |
You mean in 2020, when we had a novel virus killing people and we didn't know how it was transmitted or how it would affect different populations, and we didn't have vaccines or treatments? For gd's sake, it's almost 2023 now. No one has been locked down for over two years. Barely anyone masks now. You can get your vaccine or decide you'd rather die, and that's basically your choice because we can protect ourselves now like we couldn't back then. Isn't there anything new you can complain about now? What, inflation's not bad enough for you anymore? The BORDER isn't scaring you people anymore? What about crime - surely you can hem and haw about crime instead of being stuck in 2020 when the whole gd world was trying to deal with this horrifying new hting. |
| Shouldn't he be focused on the insurance market and making sure home owners can get it? |
He's awkward, prickly, and has a glass jaw. Anyone thinking he's Trump w/out Trump is drinking some koolaid. |
