I’m on the verge of doing that. Already sent in one complaint to the county but am not 100% sure if they’re technically breaking the law. I read that the dog needs to be barking 10 minutes or more, what it usually does is bark in 20-40 second bursts with about 1 min break in between each burst, for about 10-15 min, and they let it out about once an hour about a dozen times a day (and sometimes at night). Do you think this falls under the 10 min rule?
So they’re letting their dog out for 10 mins at 11 pm or 1 am? Or their dog is outside from 11-1? The former is probably not illegal. The latter may be.
Not the entire 2 hour period from 11pm-1am, about 10-15 minutes at a time. Dog barks every time it gets let out and the barking is very audible, it wakes me up if I don’t have noise canceling headphones on (which is really annoying to sleep with as I am a side sleeper).
Try ear plugs? I’m not sure you have much recourse here.
I’ve tried earplugs but have issues with wax buildup caused by frequent use of them. Actually sometimes the dog is outside much longer than 15min, it’s been about 40min now. They let it out 10 times a day or more. It barks off and on every few minutes. Ugh.
I realize this is annoying behavior but it's reasonable to let their dog out in their own yard. You stated it's a limited bark as they exit the house so I'd lean towards getting an antipark device off amazon. If a neighbor approached me about this, I would ask them what they expect me to do. A dog barks while entering a yard to let the other things in the yard to know it's coming. I wouldn't collar my dog for that.
It's a limited bark so it's NOT incessant? Plus One to the barking device. It is fox and deer season now, so all kinds of things to warn about in the dark. Neighbors should bring the dog in after a few minutes though.
"Limited bark"? "NOT incessant"? So to you it's only a serious issue if the dog never stops to take a breath, apparently. OP describes barking that goes on and off consistently between
11 p.m. and 1 a.m. Just because it's not endlessunbrokenbarkbarkbarkbark does not mean it is not a nuisance deserving of a call to animal control. Those hours alone are reason to call. And this is happening night after night according to OP.
The owners are pretty much asking for someone to call animal control, if the owners really think everyone sleeps through a dog barking at 1 a.m. Some people really are that oblivious, though. "Golly, I figured it was the best time because everyone's asleep!" We had neighbors like that. Complete a$$es about the fact there are actually people who aren't going to sleep through repeated, staccato, sharp noises outdoors. People who have to do things like get up and effing work the next morning. No one should have to sleep in their own home with earplugs in or headphones on, FFS. OP, call animal control and be assertive.
