Matt Lucas leaving GBBO

I’ve watched all the seasons and can genuinely say that I have liked all of the hosts equally. Funny, interesting presences—each one unique and put their own stamp on the gig. I will miss Matt.

Ha!! I would definitely watch that, but I'm pretty sure Ayoade wouldn't take such a people person's gig!

NP. As an Ayoade fan, this post made me laugh out loud. I agree with you! But the image of Ayoade trying to gin up "people person" for this show would be a hilarious one-off to watch!

Looks like some fans are actually talking up Ayoade though:

No idea whether there'd be any real traction or if Ayoade would want the gig--though I could see Noel Fielding trying to convince him!
In that item above, Joe Lycett apparently told an interviewer he's not in the running.

I'm just tickled to be discussing Ayoade, Lycett and Fielding (I see Matt Berry here too!) with people who know who the hell I'm talking about....!

Yay! I lived in the UK almost 20 years ago (before Dave) but stayed stuck on the television. Can we do a forum for British TV shows?

Thanks for the link. Wow-- so people really were thing both Joe Lycett and Matt Berry! I adore Richard Ayoade, but it's hard for me to imagine he wouldn't spend the whole time talking about how he didn't want to be there. It's just not his humor to engage deeply with any co-performers unless they're comics playing off one another. I don't see it, but I would watch every episode eagerly.

Nadiya could be a great judge, but she's not a comic. Amelia Dimoldenberg is an interesting choice, and she is at least an interviewer. But the hosts need a little warmth, and that's not really part of her persona. What about Big Zuu? I know he's a chef in addition to being a comic, so maybe he'd be better as a judge too, but he can be warm and encouraging as well as hysterically funny. Aisling Bea would be great!

He just seems mean-spirited. It's rarely self-deprecating humor.

Noel and Sandy were my favorite combo. I do like Noel in general. Sue and Mel were great too. I wasn't a big fan of Matt, but I didn't think he was horrible. I just don't like his comedy style.

+1, I didn't love him, I didn't hate him.

Oh, dear old Dave. And "Dave ja vu" if that's still around -- we haven't been back since 2019, for all too obvious reasons. Ha, amazed to find someone here who knows the odd, laddish world that is Dave!

I'm PP to whom you responded. You're my people. Agree with you that GBBO is not Ayoade's gig but he'd be hilarious doing it as a celebrity contestant, once. Wait...has that ever happened?! With him?

Nadiya would be an excellent host, I think--she's not a comic but I find her very warm, friendly, engaged and engaging. I can see her supporting contestants so well. She also just has a natural gift as a TV presenter -- when last in the UK we saw a documentary series she did where she was returning to her family's home (and of course, cooking with relatives there!). What a gem they uncovered when she came on GBBO as a contestant!

I do like the idea of Aisling Bea for a comedian/host. She and Noel might work well together. I don't know Big Zuu but now I'm going to seek him out! Thanks.

In my head I'd somehow thought I heard, a long time back, that Matt Lucas was slated to take over "QI" from Sandi Toksvig but I think that was a total mental glitch on my part, conflating her QI gig and her departure from GBBO. I was bereft, not out of any dislike for Matt Lucas but because our whole family adores Sandi, especially at the helm of QI. During 2020, Sandi's YouTube essays from her home were wondefully comforting without ever talking down to the viewer.

I'm one of the Americans who complained about him on a thread here last year. He toned it down, but he didn't fit well into the ensemble. I would like to see a woman and/or poc to balance out the group.

I watched her YouTube videos during the beginning of the pandemic. I looked forward to them every week!
