Usually because parents choose not to put in the great amount of effort or consistency required for overnight training. Most blame it on kid not being ready, which on rare occasion there’s a true medical reason, but usually it’s just the parenting issue. No judgement, just my experience-based observation.

Hahahaha, says mommy of 2-4 children. You're not a medical professional, you don't know jack shit.

I’m not a “medical professional”, but I do know several Jacks. All great kids.

I’ve toilet trained at least 100 kids in my lifetime. Including instructing parents on how to overnight toilet train at least 50 times.

All were successful.

All potty training is always successful - I don’t know any adults who don’t use the toilet

DP. We potty trained for daytime just before 2.5. Procrastinated on night training for a variety of reasons and now she is past 3.5. I have no doubt she is biologically ready, but I'm scared we missed the window to make this as easy as possible. Are we screwed?

I have known teenagers and adults that weren’t toilet trained, so don’t assume this isn’ta possibility. Usually due to medical reasons, in two instances I personally don’t think medical causes were the issue. Parents or supervising professional did not want toilet training in those cases so I wasn’t able to find out.

3.5 doesn’t sound too old to start, just make sure you’re up for the challenge. It’s work and lots of consistency is required. Don’t start then give up halfway through.

This - although we used a potty seat on top of the public toilet to get them used to public restrooms. For sure keep them in a pull up in case of accidents, but build in time to stop at a lot of rest areas if you are able to.

So true! I too have a 100% success rate on potty training. I must be a genius. We never night trained

If a child is doing VERY well with our initial attempt at potty training in the daytime, but seems to be nowhere near close at night. Are we causing confusion by having him wear underwear in the daytime, and a diaper for bed? DS is 3.

How do we approach an upcoming 10+ hour road trip and possible hotel stay? Do we forge ahead with PTing? Or pause things?

No, it does not cause confusion. A fair number of kids take longer to be dry at night-it is a matter of the body maturing to hold urine in while asleep. One of my dc trained easily and quickly at age 2 but was not dry at night till 5-it was simply a matter of physical maturity (this dc is now a successful young adult).

I'd keep PTing on the trip but use a pullup in the car and night at hotel. You never know when you'll hit a traffic jam 5 miles from the rest area!

Diapers almost a year, at night, is fine. I would definitely do it at a hotel. And probably in the car seat for a long drive -- because this will be a real problem for you. Evaluate it on your convenience/inconvenience.
