Kids at 2 or 3 years old may not have large enough bladders to hold it in all night. And they still don't know how to wake up to go to the toilet. |
It can if you have a wilful toddler who is holding their log for the nightly diaper. |
Do not pause for the road trip. Get them used to using public toilets. Get a foldable toilet seat reducer and bring it. You do not want a regression at age 3. |
If he's wearing actual diapers for bedtime, you might want to consider switching to a pull-up, and give a gentle reminder that it's OK/preferable to get up and go to the toilet if he needs to go in the night.
Up to this point, he's been wearing diapers his whole life - and not bothering to hold it at all when he needs to go. It's probably habit for him to just pee w/o holding it while he's got a diaper on. Pull-ups are usually useless for most of the potty training process. But in this instance, I feel like it would be a good way to encourage him to try and stay dry at night possibly. |
For the road trip, take a portable potty with you and make regular stops. Have try the potty before the trip. |
Have *the child* try the potty before the trip |
You can also get potty adapter seats to put on toilet seats |
It probably will not confuse the child, but it will likely prolong the whole process. |
As many have already said, totally ok and in my opinion preferable to defer night training. When day training is going great, you don’t want a bunch of demoralizing nighttime accidents to make your kid feel like they are not succeeding!
For your road trip, I’d continue PT except the car ride itself. Use a pull up then and tell your kid they should still ask to go potty if they can. For reference, my daughter was day trained by 2.5 but not night trained til 3.5. One day she told me “I don’t need my pull up anymore” and she never wore it to bed again. |
Have him wear a diaper but ask him if he needs to pee when you make stops. It won't set him back. |
My 3yo was PT'd at 2 for pee, maybe 2.5 for poop. She is still not trained at night and wears Pullups. It has caused zero confusion. Her brain is not able to wake her up for bathroom urges in the night and that's fine. |
^also, I absolutely did pull-ups for travel during the phase you're in, OP, but gradually phased them out except for nighttime or VERY long flights. I prompted her to go to the potty while traveling but would have her in a pullup to be safe. |
What was your fabulous method for training while the child slept? A recording loop...do not pee till morning...stay dry...mommy will love you more... |
We didn't "night train" -- we let our kid use pull ups until he was staying dry for about a month consistently. There have been a few accidents, but not many, over the past year or so since then. |
+1, we've had one nighttime accident since doing this approach to night training and it was wen DD was sick with a stomach bug so I don't really think it counts. |
