Subaru probably won’t exist in the US in ten years

Subarus are extremely popular in the US. They aren't going anywhere.

Their quality and reliability have gone downhill in the past seven years or so.

Maybe? But they’re so behind on hybrids and EVs that it’s hard to imagine how they plan to compete here. It’s puzzled me for years.

This is the thing. For whatever reason the Japanese govt/car companies have thought the future of cars was hydrogen fuel cells and they've complete neglected battery technology (so Honda is the only company to ever produce a commercial fuel cell car and it still doesn't a battery EV I think).

Now the head of Subaru is looking for a scapegoat for their crappy strategy.

They'll buy Toyota sleds or partner with Toyota. They already cross brand one sedan and Toyota already own a stake in Subaru

The above quote is incorrect.

The Subaru Outback, Subaru Forester, and Subaru Crosstrek are three of the highest rated vehicles by Consumer reports December 2022 magazine and December 2021 magazine.

Among their respective categories, the Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek are the highest rated.

Consumer reports December 2022 New cars magazine:

SUVs; Midsized (2 row): Subaru Outback is the top rated with a total score of 85 (the 52 point road test also scored a category high of 91).

SUVs: Small: Subaru Forester is the top rated non-hybrid with scores of 90 and 90. Forester is rated "best overall" by CR. (Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is rated top as most fuel efficient.)

Subaru Imprezza is the top rated "small sedan" by CR.

Consumer Reports is about as trustworthy as the Utne Reader.

What year was this Forester?

Oops, forgot about this thread!

I’ve never heard of a manual failing like that.

But the CVT’s fail regularly

I’d also read that about the CVTs.

I know of one other person this happened to with a manual Crosstrek—he was on the highway, also with no warning, was able to pull over to the shoulder.

My Outback is 10 years old and if Subaru offered a Hybrid Outback (the cross trek is too small for me), I would be trading my car in right now. Instead, I came on here to post a question about what hybrid SUVs we should start looking at to buy in the next year.

I love my 2012 Forester and hope to get many more years out of it. But we will likely need to replace my husband's ancient car soon. I 'd love to get another Subaru, but I won't because there are no electric options. It's a shame.

I hope Subaru doesn't go under, as that could also spell demise for key suppliers like the company that makes the "Coexist" bumper stickers that come standard on all Subaru models.
